community The word community is derived from the Latin word “communis” which means "common, public, shared by all or many” A community is a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in Common such as norms, religion, values, or identity.

HEALTH The word health is derived from the old English word “ hal ”, meaning the condition of being ‘safe and sound’ or whole Health was considered as a freedom from pain , illness, disability Definition of health The WHO in 1946 defines “ health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and not Merly the absence of disease or infirmity

. COMMUNITY HEALTH Community health is an art and science of taking care of health in all its aspects of life which includes promotion and preservation of diseases through: maintaining good sanitation, potable water supply providing health education to self care, nutrition etc controlling communicable and non communicable diseases by organizing proper medical and nursing services.

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING IN WORLD In England ,the birth of community health concept took place around 1840 by a health philosopher Johanna peter and enunciated the principle that the state is responsible for the health of its people. The public health act of 1848 was fulfilment of his dream. Sir John Simon, the first medical officer of health of London build up a system of public health in England

Cotinue …. The early phase of public health (1880-1920) is often called the "disease control phase Efforts were directed entirely towards general cleanliness, garbage and refuse disposal. In America in 1850 Lemual shattuck (1793-18591, a book seller published his report on health conditions in Massachusetts. It stirred the conscience of the American people to the improvement of public health. By the beginning of 20 century, the broad foundations of public health clean water, clean surroundings & wholesome condition of houses were laid in all countries of the west ern world. The public health made rapid strides in western world & its progress has been slow in developing countries such as India

Qualities of community health nursing She must be sympathetic, empathetic and understanding She must be respectful, tolerant and patient She must be tactful, observant and co operative She must be able to adjust and work freely with different people different situations in the community She must appreciate the effort of all people and correct their mistakes tactfully and not condemn She must create good interpersonal relationship with colleagues and other health workers and clients She must be trustworthy, punctual and sincere with his/her work

GENERAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES OF COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSE The community health nurse also plays the same role as she is offering in hospital as administrates, managers, educator, researcher, supervisor, teacher etc., She provides basic, promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services directly to the community. The specific nursing activities which are performed by the community nurse will vary according to community needs and prevailing health problems and the number of staff working in her area, transportation facilities available etc. She is prepared to give specific and generalized services in home, industry and schools.

SPECIALIZED FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSE It includes in areas of maternal health, family welfare, child health, school health. communicable diseases control, geriatrics, chronically ill and industrial health etc .
