2. Meaning of Computer The word “Computer ” is derived or come from the Latin word “ Computare ”. Which means “ TO COMPUTE” or To Calculate. Computer-1640s Calculating machine-1897 Programmable Digital electronic computer-1937, as T uring machine ENIAC(1946)(Electronic Numerical and Computer integrator) Usually considered the worlds first Computer or first general purpose electronic digital computer. Definition of Computer: Computer is an advanced electronic device that takes raw data as input from the user and processes these data under the control of set of instructions (called program) and gives the result (output) and saves output for the future use. It can process both numerical and non-numerical (arithmetic and logical calculations. 4. Definition of Computer: Computer is an electronic device, used for performing calculations and controlling operations that be either expressed in logical or numerical terms. Computer need to be told exactly what to do and how to do to accomplish a task It stores and process data in binary form according to instructions given to it in a variable program. It is a combination of hardware and software Software is the set of instructions given to the computer to perform a task The physical parts that make up computer are called hardware, which are made of circuits and transistors.

Characteristics of Computer Some important characteristics of the computer are as follow: Speed: A computer works with much higher speed compared to humans Computers can process millions of instructions per second. The time taken by computers for their operations is microseconds, nanoseconds and now a days Pico seconds(10-12). For example, calculation and generation of salary slips of thousands of employees of an organization, weather forecasting that requires analysis of a large amount of data related to temperature, pressure and humidity of various places, etc .

7. Characteristics of Computer Accuracy Computers perform calculations with 100% accuracy. Errors that may occur can almost always be attributed to human error. Inaccurate data, poorly designed system or faulty programs written by the programmer. For example, the computer can accurately give the result of division of any two numbers up to 10 decimal places.

8. Characteristics of Computer Reliability A computer is reliable as it gives consistent result for similar set of data we give same set of input any number of times, we will get the same result. Diligence: Unlike human beings, a computer is free from monotony, tiredness & lack of concentration. It can continuously work for hours without creating any error & without grumbling. If you give ten million calculations to performed, it will perform with exactly the same accuracy & speed as the first one .

9. Characteristics of Computer Versatility: The capacity of the computer of performing more than one task at the same time. Computer is versatile in nature. It can perform different types of tasks with the same ease. At one moment you can use the computer to prepare a letter document and in the next moment you may play music or print a document. Computers have several limitations too. Computer can only perform tasks that it has been programmed to do.

Characteristics of Computer Automatic ( Programmable ): Once instructions are given to the system it works automatically without any human intervention until the completion of program until it meets logical instruction to terminate the job . Computer cannot start themselves. Once it started on a job they carry on until the job is finished.

11. Characteristics of Computer Power of remembering : Computer can store and recall any amount of data because of its high storage capacity of its storage devices. Every piece of information can be retained as long as desired by the user and can be recalled as and when required. Even after several years, if the information recalled, it will be as accurate as on the day when it was filled to the computers .

Characteristics of Computer Large Storage Capacity/Memory: A computer has large storage capacity. it can storage large volume of data. we can store any kind of data in computers storage. this data can be text, picture, sound, video etc . A limited amount of data can be stored, temporarily, in the primary memory. Secondary storage devices like floppy disk and compact disk can store a large amount of data permanently .

13. Characteristics of Computer Recreation: In recent years, computers were used mainly for entertainment and amusement, like computer games and other programs, computer animation gives life and movement to inanimate objects. Multimedia too helped in popularizing the use of computers.

14. Characteristics of Computer Compactness : ( sandrate ) Now-a-day’s size of computers has decreased o lot due to increased technology. The laptop and Notebook computers can be taken outside . No Feelings : A Computer has no feelings because they are machines. Based on our feelings, task, knowledge and experience we often make certain judgments in our day today life. But Computer goes exactly the way which we have given the instructions 11. Cost effectiveness: Computers reduce the amount of paper work and human effort, thereby reducing costs.
