There are four types of network PAN LAN MAN WAN 1.PAN(Personal Area Network) Personal area network is a network arranged within an individual. Personal area network is used for connecting the computer devices of personal use. 5

Example When we connect our mobile to PC by using USB or Wifi this type of network is called Personal Area Network. 6

2.LAN(Local Area Network) Local area network is a group of computers connected to each other in a small area such as building, office, college, university, bank etc. 7

3.MAN(Metropolitan Area Network) A metropolitan area network is a network that covers larger geographical area by interconnecting a different LAN to form a larger. Government agencies use MAN to connect to the citizens and private industries. MAN is used in communication between the banks in a city. 8

4.WAN(Wide Area Network) A wide area network is a network that extends over a very large geographical area such as states or countries. A wide area network is widely used in the field of business, government and education. This wide area network is called as internet. 9

History of Internet: The internet started as an experiment in the late 1960 by the Advance Research Project Agency (ARPA).Now called the Defence Advance Research Project Agency (DARPA). ARPANet(Advance Research Project Agency Network)was developed under U.S Department of Defence (DOD),it was developed to survive nuclear attack. ARPANet was world’s first operational network developed in 1967. ARPANet consisted of four main computers located at: >University of California,Los Angeles 10

>University of California,Santa Barbara >The Stanford Research Institute >University of Utah In 1980 NSF(National Science Foundation) started to make high capacity network for Academic & Engineering Research. This network called as NSFnet. In 1990 internetworking of ARPANet, NSFnet & other private network resulted into INTERNET. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARPANET https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Science_Foundation_Network 11

Basic Elements of Internet World Wide Web(W.W.W) It is a collection of webpages found on this network of computers. Our web-browser uses the internet to access the web. Web Page A webpage is a specific collection of information provided by a website and displayed to a user in a web-browser. 12

Server Any computer that makes services available to other computers, that is called as a server. Protocol A protocol is a standard set of rules that allow electronic devices to communicate with each other. These rules may be transmitted, what commands are used to send and receive data. Eg: TCP(Transmission Control Protocol) IP(Internet Protocol) 6. URL(Uniform Resource Locator): It is a unique name that identifies an internet site(website). 14

Need of Internet: Research The internet allows us to locate information on the subjects we are researching. Example:- Google Scholar, Infomine https://scholar.google.com/ 15

2. Blogging Blogging allows students and teachers to post written thoughts to a website. The blogger can write on any subject to be viewed and commented on by others. https://www.blogger.com/about/ 3. Communicate Teachers, students and parents can communicate easily through internet. 4. Study & Research The internet contains a wealth of knowledge that is available instantly upon any search. Because of this, the internet has suppressed libraries as a source for information gathering & research. 5. Cost effective & Affordable Education One of the largest barriers to education is high cost. Internet provides education through videos and webtutorials which is affordable to everyone and cost effective. 20

6. Student-Teacher&Peer Interaction The internet has allowed students to be in constant touch with their teachers or peers with the help of social media or messaging Apps. 7.
