Meaning, Definitions, Aims, Need and Significance of Education.

2. What is education ? Knowledge is systematic process through which a child or an adult acquire knowledge. It’s goal is to make an individual perfect. Every society gives importance to education because it is a panacea for all evils . It is the key to solve various problems of life . Education is about learning skills and knowledge .

3. Definitions Mahatma Gandhi : “By education I mean an all-round drawing out of the best in man-body , mind and spirit”. Swami Vivekananda : “Education Is the manifestation of divine perfection already existing in man ”. Aristotle : “ Education is the creation of sound mind in a sound body”. Rousseau : “Education is the child’s development from within”. Plato : “Education is the capacity to feel pleasure and pain at the right moment”. John Dewey : “Education is the process of living through a continuous reconstruction of experiences”.

4. Etymological concept of Education The word education is derived from Latin word EDUCERE , EDUCARE & EDUCATUM which means “ to learn", "to Know ” and "to lead out ”. Education Means to lead out internal hidden talent of a child or person . Etymological terms Meaning Educare To bring up, to nourish. 2. Educere To lead out or to draw out. 3. Educo To letter ‘E’ means out and ' Duco ’ means to lead. 4. Educatum The act of teaching or training.

5. Narrow Concept of Education In narrow sense of the term, Education is equalled with instructions given in formal educational institutions, namely schools, colleges and universities. It doesn’t include the Education outside of four walls of institution. Emphasis on bookish knowledge. Not a lifelong process, it is over with completion of schooling.

6. Broader concept of Education Education is a life long & continuous process. According to its concept Education is universal, we can gain Education from anywhere, anytime. There is no bound of place and time Education is the life long process. It comprises the totality of our experiences .

7. Importance of Education Process of learning and knowing . Not restricted to our school . Continues through our life . Event happening around us,educate us. Existence of human being is fruitless without education . An educated person has the ability to change the world . 8. Nature of education Education is the life - long process. Education is a systematic process. Education is the development of education and society. Education is the modification of behaviour. Education is the dynamic process. Education as growth.

9. Significance of education Makes better citizens . Making us responsible citizen . Education makes a worthy contribution to us lives . An educated person is better citizens. It enable us to understand our duties as a citizen. Education open our mind and expand our horizon . We get to know our culture history and values through Education .

11. Conclusion “The aim of Education is the development of valuable personality and spiritual individuality”. The true aim of Education cannot be other than the highest development of the individual as a member of society. Let Education burn the individual flame, feeding it with the oil of society.
