CONCEPT OF EVALUATION Evaluation serves as an in-built monitor within the education system to review the progress in learning from time to time. Evaluation provides valuable feedback on the design and the implementation of the educational programme . Evaluation is a broader term than the Measurement.

Definition of evaluation James M. Bradfield : Evaluation is the assignment of symbols to phenomenon, in order to characterize the worth or value of a phenomenon, usually with reference to some cultural or scientific standards. Thorndike and Hegan : Evaluation is describing something in term of selected attributes and judging the degree of acceptability or suitability of that which has been described.   Hopkins and Stanley, 1981 A process of summing up the results of measurement or tests, giving them some meaning based on value judgements.

Principles of Evaluation It must be clearly stated what is to be evaluated A variety of evaluation techniques should be used for a comprehensive evaluation An evaluator should know the limitations of different evaluation techniques The technique of evaluation must be appropriate for the characteristics or performance to be measured Evaluation is a means to an end but not an end in itself

Need of Evaluation in education Evaluation helps in - preparing instructional objectives assessing the learner’s needs providing feed back to the students assigning duties to the students curriculum development reporting pupil’s progress to parents guidance and counselling effective school administration categorizing students helps the students to choose particular career options

Conclusion Evaluation is equally helpful to parents, teachers, administrators and students. It helps a teacher to know his pupils in detail It helps an administrator in educational planning. It helps the parents to know about the educational progress of their children.
