1.3 Growth, Maturation and Development of Learner Quantitative changes in the body that is height ,weight while development refers to both the qualitative and Quantitative changes.

Concept of Growth and Development These two terms are Interchangeable and taken as synonymous terms. An individual starting from a fertilized egg, turns into a full fledged human adult

What is a growth What is growth? The Encyclopedia Britannica defines “growth” as an increase in the size or the amount of an entity. The word growth is used for all those structural and physiological changes that take place within individual during the process of maturation

Increase in size

It is a biological process and continues for birth to adulthood. From the very beginning, a child needs food. When he eats food, it becomes a part of his body. During this time new cells are produced which results in physical increase. This physical increase is called growth.

A) Meaning of Growth Growth is a sign of life The term growth is used in purely physical scene. Growth is one of the parts of a developmental process Growth may be referred to describe the changes which take place in particular aspects of the body and behavior of an organism.

Growth does not continue throughout the life. The changes produced by growth are subjects of measurements. Growth may or may not bring development.

Definition of growth Hurlock:- Growth is change in size in proportion, disappearance of old features and acquisition of new ones. Crow and crow :- Growth refers to structural and physiological changes.

Development Development means overall changes in shape ,form or structure. It refers to overall changes in the individual growth which is one of its parts. Development is continuous process.

Definition Websters : Development is the series of changes which an organism undergoes in passing from an embryonic stage to maturity. J. E. Anderson(1950) Development is concerned with growth as well as those changes in behavior which results from environmental situation.
