INTRODUTION The term "consumer movement" refers to only nonprofit advocacy groups and grassroots activism to promote consumer interest by reforming the practices of corporations or policies of the government, so the "consumer movement" is a subset of the discipline of " consumerism“ In india the consumer movement as a social force originated with the necessity of promoting and protecting the interest of consumer against unethical and unfair trade practices
Meaning Consumer movement, consumer is regarded as king in modern marketing. In practice, he is not given any such importance. Consumers are ignored in general. They are exploited and cheated. Consumer movement, consumers unite together for protecting their own interests. It is a peaceful and democratic movement of for self-protection against their exploitation. Consumer movement is also referred to as consumerism. It is the movement of the consumers, by the consumers and for the consumers to safeguard and to promote their interest Definition According to Philip Kotler and G. Armstrong, consumer movement is define “ consumerism is an organized movement of citizens and government to impose the right and power of buyers in relation to seller.’ According to cravens and hills , consumer movement is define :” consumerism is a social force with9in the environment designed to aid and protect the consumer by exerting legal, moral and economic pressure on business.’

As per data available with the government, consumer complaints increased by 70% in the two years. The complaints received through the national consumer helpline reached 1.72 lakh in 2015-16.
To increase the awareness of consumers, there are many consumer organizations and NGOs that have been established. CONSUMER GUIDANCE SOCIETY OF INDIA (CGSI) was THE FIRST CONSUMER ORGANISATION ESTABLISHED IN INDIA IN 1966. It was followed by many others such as (1) Consumer Education And Research Centre (Gujarat) (2) Bureau Of Indian Standards (3) Federation Of Consumer Organization In Tamil Nadu (4) Mumbai Grahak Panchayat (5) Consumer Voice (New Delhi) (6) Legal Aid Society (Kolkata) (7) Akhil Bhartiya Grahak Panchayat (8) The Consumers Eye India. (9)United India Consumer's Association.

Some of these problems are in the nature of unfair trade practices, misleading and deceptive advertisement, offering gifts and prizes, promotional contests etc . However, there was no organized and systematic movement to safeguard the interest of consumers .
