Content and Contextual Analysis of Selected Primary Sources in Philippine History

Learning Objectives Familiarize with primary documents from different historical periods. Learn history through primary sources. Interpret primary sources by examining content and context. Understand historical context of selected documents.

Importance of Primary Sources Primary sources are essential because they allow us to witness history through the words, actions, and perspectives of people who lived at that time. However, historians must carefully examine these documents to understand their context and prevent misinterpretation. Reading sources critically helps us see the biases or limitations in an author’s account, leading to a more accurate understanding of the past.

External Criticism External criticism tests the authenticity of a historical source. This means checking whether the document or artifact is real, original, and not fake.

Internal Criticism Internal criticism analyzes the credibility and reliability of what the source says. It checks if the information is true and makes sense in its historical context.

Antonio Pigafetta’s First Voyage Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian scholar and explorer who joined Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition. He documented the First Voyage Around the World and described the Philippines in detail.

Pigafetta’s Account Pigafetta wrote about their stop at the Ladrones Islands, reaching Samar, trading with locals, the first Mass, baptism of Rajah Humabon , and the Battle of Mactan where Magellan died.

Significance of Pigafetta’s Work Pigafetta’s writing is a valuable primary source. It helps us understand precolonial Filipino society and the first contact between Filipinos and Europeans.

Historians Example Historians like Edward Gibbon and Howard Zinn show how historians interpret sources differently. Gibbon wrote about the Roman Empire. Zinn wrote ‘A People’s History of the United States’ to highlight ordinary people’s stories.

Edward Gibbon Edward Gibbon (1737–1794) was an English historian known for ‘The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.’ His work is a classic example of using primary sources to interpret historical events.

Howard Zinn Howard Zinn (1922–2010) was an American historian best known for ‘A People’s History of the United States.’ He used primary sources to tell history from the perspective of marginalized groups.
