CONTINUING EDUCATION It is planned activity and directed towards meeting the learning needs available following there completion of college programme to keep the registered the nurses abreast of their particular field of interest. Continuing education is a means of staff development which assist the employee to improve the performance in her present situation.

Various opportunities are available for nurses to work according to their professional qualification such as A.N.M., G.N.M., B.Sc. Post Basic Nursing, B.Sc. Nursing, M.Sc. Nursing and Ph. D in Nursing. The certificate courses such as intensive care, paediatric care, ophthalmic care, operation theatre, premature care, kidney dialysis etc. and diploma courses such as Teaching Public Health Administration, Psychiatric Nursing. To develop proficiency and skills, the nurse attends orientation programmes, work-shops, seminars & conferences etc.

DEFINITION “ Continuing education is all the learning activities that occurs after an individual has completed his basic education.” -cooper “ That education which builds on previous knowledge.” -Shannon “ Continuing education is any extension of opportunities for reading, study, and training to young persons and adults following their completion of or withdrawal from full-time school and college.”

OBJECTIVES Keep up to date with new concepts development in the health field. To increase their basis knowledge and skills and develop positive attitudes. Develop an ability to analyse problems and to work with others. Meet the challenge of changes in technology.

Maintain standards of health care at acceptable level. Help in setting standards of performance. Motivate staff for better patient care. Meet new needs of the community. To assist the nursing educator in increasing the teaching effectiveness. To develop leadership potential in nurses. To promote the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes. To enhance the nursing practice, thus improving health care to public.

To meet the health needs and public expectations. To develop the practicing abilities of the nurse. To improve the communication between the participants, faculty, community, and health sector.

METHODS USED FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION

PRINCIPLES Provisions for school and nursing faculty involvement in planning and teaching the continuing nursing education courses tends to maintain high educational standards for the programme. An adequate staff is essential to planning, implementing and evaluating a programme which is based on learning needs and which has an impact on the quality of nursing care provided.

Staff services are required with sufficient talents and numbers to implement the planned programme: Advisory. Secretarial. Administrative. Supportive Assistance with research, publicity, questionnaire, evaluation tools, data analysis, computer programming.

Responsibility of the Director of Continuing Nursing Education are :- Determination of learning needs of the nurse population. Development and implementation of a program to meet these needs. An advisory committee has to be appointed which includes :- Faculty members from a variety of areas of nursing practices. Directors of hospital nursing services. Representatives from the state licensing authority, health

department and voluntary agencies. Medical and allied health professionals. Other agencies involved in the delivery of health care in the community. The community may serve as a liaison between the school of nursing and the health community and fulfil communication and public relations function for the university. Continuing nursing education program may be decentralized or centralized.

DECENTRALIZATION Faculty of an academic department initiate, plan, implement & evaluate its own programme of continuing education. Programming within each academic department. Depends on public interested subject field.

CENTRALIZATION A separate department or extension division is responsible for the CNE programme of the entire university. Financial support is either university grants or self-supporting. Faculty may be of regular basis or hired on a contract basis.

Elements of Continuing Nursing Education

THE TEACHER The Teacher’s task is to help the student how to learn, how to approach situations with an open, inquiring attitude, how to interpret what he observes. The teacher must help the learner to discover new approaches. Teacher should act as a role model, friend, guide and philosopher. The teacher is a dispenser of wisdom and knowledge. The skillful teacher has to aware what is already known and encouraging

exploration in those areas yet to be discovered The continuing nursing educator has to play multiple roles like : Guide and counsellor to the learner An arranger and organizer of learning experiences Motivator and an encourager of students Evaluator of programs Producing instructional materials Administrative role

STEPS IN PLANNING CONTINUING NURSING EDUCATION Establishing goals compatible with the purpose or mission of the organization. Deciding upon specific objectives consistent with these goals. Determining the course of action required to meet the specific objectives. Assessing the available resources for establishing the programme. Establishing a workable budget, appropriate for the programme. Evaluating the results at stated intervals. Reassessing he goals and updating the plan periodically.

A successful continuing nursing education programme is the result of careful and detailed planning. Aspects of continuing nursing education planning: Broad planning by institution and agencies responsible for continuing nursing education. Specific planning by individuals for their own continuing education.

Planning is essential to: - Meet the nursing needs. - Use available resources. - Meet needs at all levels i.e., local, state, regional, national, and international. -Avoid duplication and fragmentation of efforts. - Help keep at a minimum any gaps in meeting the continuing education needs of the nurses.

RESEARCHES IN CNE Nurses who continue their education in the field of enjoy marked professional advantages. An increasing number of studies are evaluating the effects of continuing nurse education on practice .

SETTING RESEARCH INTO PRACTICE Setting research into practice is not as simple as choosing an intervention and hoping for best. Administrative or financial policies may exists within organizations that act as disincentives to improving the practice of individuals. Interventions should ideally be tailored to an individual’s stage of change.

ROLES OF THE NURSE Applies adult learning principles when helping nurses learn new skills or information. Use Sensitive to the learning deficits of the nursing staff and creatively minimize these difficulties. Prepare the nurses readily regarding knowledge and skill deficits. Actively seeks out teaching opportunities for nurses. Teaching techniques that empower nursing staff.

Active involvement in all aspects of planning, implementation, and evaluation of a continuing nursing education activity. Responsible for ensuring that appropriate educational design principles are used and processes are consistent with the requirements of the ANCC Accreditation Program. Participate with primary nurse planner in assessing and evaluating the overall effectiveness of the provider unit.
