CHAPTER i INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study Belief is one of influential and supporting factor in a successful learning process (Fazilatfar et al., 2014). Belief constitutes an important part that has been known by teacher during he or she educates their learners (Boakye, 2016). It is evident that the aim of teacher of language would like to obtain the maximum result from their effort maintained particularly to attain the expected outcomes. Consquently, the language teacher should to know the students’ belief about language in term of student desire, so that the teacher can arrange the strategies in which they implement in the instructional process.
1.2 Identificasion of the Problem After conducting the preliminary research toward freshmen of English language education students in Ahmad Dahlan University, the researcher has identified some problems that might be exist in freshmen beliefs toward English language learning. Those are as follow. The freshmen have different English aptitude The freshmen still lack in communicating English language in daily conversation, such as speaking, writing, listening, and reading. The freshmen were difficult in developing their ideas into a form of English language.
1.3. Scope and Limitation of the Problem This study focuses on investigate learners‘ beliefs in learning English as a foreign language by using BALLI questionnaire as the instrument to collect primary data. 1.4 Research Problems This study has been arranged to answer the following questions. What are the university students belief about language learning? How the university student practices about enhancing their belief in studying English language?
1.6 Definition of Key Terms To specify and understand the variables involved in this thesis, the researcher needs to explain some key terms: 1.6.1 Belief Belief is a human behavior which is shown while perceiving knowledgeable and concluding that he has reached the truth. In the other hands, someone’s belief is not absolutely true and it cannot be a guaranteed.
1.6.2. Language Learning Learning is a discovery, inquiry, and collaboration which is facilitated by language. Besides, it has a complex process. Composed of interrelated symbol systems and regulated by rules, language is a social and unique way to represent, explore and convey meaning. As well as being a prominent element of culture, language is an unmistakable mark of individual identity and is important for creating interpersonal relationships, recognizing social settings, expanding experience, reflecting on thought and action, and leading to a democratic society. The prominent basis of all communication is language and the eminent tools of thought.
CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 2.1 Relevant Theories of Belief Belief is a knowledge ’s kind which is based on basic and the experience ( Pehkonen & Ani , 2012). If beliefs are related to other beliefs, it is called “core” or “central beliefs.” But, if a belief is affiliated with other beliefs, they will get more results ..
2.2. The Nature of Language Learning Language learning is a process in which language as a purpose to be comprehensively mastered by the learner (Lightfoot, 2010). Learning language is boundless of time and place in which language is always developed and improved. Enriching the vocabulary is one of the careful comprehension that is learned in language learning process. However, learning language is not only about visible outcome such as four crucial skills, but also the student’s internal factor such as belief and motivation which is motivating their desire to learn.
2.3. Review of Previous Studies The first study was conducted by Iswati (2019). She was investigating the students’ belief of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in mixed-ability class of a private university in Yogyakarta. From the results, she suggested that teachers evaluate their teaching approach and strategy in order to increase students‘ motivation, confidence, and interest in learning English which can eventually promote learners‘ success in learning English as a foreign language . The second study was conducted by Fazilatfar , Damavandi , Sani, and Heirai (2014). They created a research entitled, “Learners’ Belief Changes about Language Learning”. The result can be revealed that Iranian university students had a positive attitude regarding learning English in that it can provide an appropriate job conditions for them
The third study was conducted by Ariogul , Unal , and Onursal (2009) entitled, “Foreign language learners’ beliefs about language learning: a study on Turkish university students”. They have addressed the differences and similarities among English, German, and French language groups’ beliefs about language learning . Their study have resulted positive expectations in language learning for French language learners, all three groups held certain beliefs that would be detrimental to their long-term language learning. The forth study was conducted by Hulin & Yulian (2016) which had created a study entitled, “A Study of the Relationship between Learning Belief and English Achievement of Chinese English Major College Students ”. the result showed that the relation between learning belief has a general positive effect on learning achievement, but not determinative; personality plays important role in learning belief; aptitude and hard work are able to produce high scores; good achievement students are driven by both integrative and instrumental motivation, teachers and the classmates have mutual influence on learning achievement
