Contribution of Aryabhata Dr.Roma Smart Joseph Teacher Educator Lucknow (UP) India

ARYABHATA Aryabhata was born in 476 A.D. Kusumpur ,  ( Pataliputra ) (present-day  Patna) India. He was the first in the line of great mathematicians and contributed towards Indian Mathematics and Astronomy.

His famous work includes: ARYABHATIYA ARYASTASATA KALAKRIYA GOLA

CONTRIBUTIONS Aryabhata states that pi (π) is an irrational number . In the 2 nd part of Aryabhatiya , he writes the ratio of circumference to diameter is 3.1416. He has also discussed the concept of sine in his work by the name of ardhajy , which means half – chord. He has also given the formula for area of triangle.

4.He also gave formulae for area of a square , rectangle, rhombus, circle etc. 5. He has given the method of addition, subtraction, multiplication of simple and compound algebraic quantities. 6. He formulated for the first time in India the formula for interest and time.

7. He gave the formula = ( a + b)2= a2+ b2+2ab 8. Aryabhata also did a considerable amount of work in astronomy. He has also given the calculations of the rotation of the earth on its axis. He pointed out the eclipses; both lunar and solar.
