Conventional Traditional or Local Folk Music & Arts (Pre-war) Common to the Philippines & Southeast Asia

Theater - a collaborative art form that involves live performances of stories, often using a combination of acting, directing, design, and technical elements Puppets - a three-dimensional figure manipulated by a puppeteer to perform in a theatrical or other artistic context Shadow

Puppetry - a form of storytelling and entertainment using flat, articulated figures (shadow puppets) held between a light source and a translucent screen. Articulated Puppet – A puppet designed with movable joints (e.g., at the shoulders, elbows, knees) that allow for a range of motions when manipulated. (This applies to both Wayang Kulit and many Carillo figures.)

For hundreds of years, puppets in Southeast Asia were used to entertain people, convey ideas and values, and bring local folktales to life. As one of the world's oldest forms of theater, puppetry continues to fascinate many with its imaginative storytelling and arousing Southeast Asian music ensembles. Today, electric music instruments are now used for a more amplified sound.

Wayang Kulit - Shadow Puppetry In Indonesia and Malaysia, Wayang may either mean "theater", or a kind of "puppet theater". Shadow puppet theater is accompanied by the Gamelan, which plays behind the white curtain. The Dalang is its main puppeteer, characterized by being creative, humorous, and flexible. He also speaks the parts of all the characters, with the skill of having an interchangeable voice-his main ability which gives more life to different puppets. Arjuna, the hero, is represented with a clear voice, speaking in a single tone. Puppets with bigger bodies are given lower, resonant voices.

Rhythm stresses on the last beat of each measure. Gamelan beats are often in duple meter, the tempo is fast, and sometimes to the point of playing improvised or spontaneously in free time signature. The melody is accompanied by instruments that either play with simple unison or busy heterophonic texture. Dynamics change to loud or soft abruptly, as instruments are also responsible for plavina not only music

Carillo is the traditional Philippine term for a form of shadow puppetry. It's a type of theatrical entertainment where flat, cut-out figures are manipulated behind a translucent screen with a light source, casting shadows that tell a story. Here are some key characteristics of Carillo:

● Materials : Unlike the intricate leather puppets of Indonesian Wayang Kulit , Carillo typically uses simpler puppets made from cardboard or thin wood. Some regional variations might use different materials like cloth or bamboo.

● Performance: A single puppeteer, sometimes called a carillista , manipulates the figures, narrates the story, provides character voices, and may be accompanied by music or songs.

● Narratives : Carillo performances often draw from local folk tales, legends, moralistic stories, and sometimes adapted from European plays or even religious narratives. During the Spanish colonial era, some Carillo shows even presented moro-moro (Christian Muslim conflict plays).

● Cultural Significance : Like other traditional folk arts, Carillo served as a popular form of entertainment, particularly in the pre-war era, and played a role in transmitting cultural values, moral lessons, and local lorewithin communities.

● Regional Names : While "Carillo" is commonly used in Manila, Rizal, Batangas, and Laguna, this shadow play goes by different regional names in other provinces, such as Titres , Titiri , Gagalo / Kikimut , and Aliala .

● Historical Context : The first recorded Carillo performances in the Philippines date back to 1879 in Quiapo , Manila. Notably, the national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, as a boy, was known to have played with shadow puppets in Calamba, Laguna.

Though less ornate than Wayang Kulit , Carillo represents a distinct and cherished part of the Philippines' rich traditional performing arts heritage.
