Phrasal verbs are verb structures formed by linking a main verb
with a preposition or adverb (or both). This combination changes
the original meaning of the verb, sometimes radically.

STRUCTURESTRUCTURE
The basic structure is:
Verb + particle
When it’s an adverb... When it’s a preposition... When they’re both...
Verb + adverb Verb + preposition Verb + adverb + preposition
For example:
Wake up (levantarse)
Give up (rendirse)
For example:
Look after (cuidar)
Talk about (hablar
sobre).
For example:
Get along with (llevarse
bien con)
Put up with (aguantar).
Separable
Transitive
Inseparable
Transitive
The action falls on the
object, and they’re
separable because the
subject can be placed
between the verb and
the particle.
For example:
He took her daughter away.
He took away her daughter.
She turned off the radio.
She turned the radio off .
The action falls on the
object as well, but there
are no modifications.
For example:
It’s time to get over you.
Look at me!
They waited for the bus.
Intransitives
It affects only the subject
of the sentence. They
don’t use an object (direct
object).
For example:
I wake up.
The car broke down.
We went away.
VERB TENSESVERB TENSES
In the verb tenses, we conjugate phrasal verbs as in any verb,
but never the particle.
Simple Present: "I wake up early every day."
"She looks after her grandmother."
Past Simple: "We called off the meeting."
"He bumped into his old friend at the store."
Future Simple: "They will look into the problem."
"I will put on my coat before going out."
IMPORTANCEIMPORTANCE
Phrasal verbs are essential because they are widely used in spoken
English, with over 10,000 expressions in use. They appear more
often in everyday conversation than in written texts, and are a key
part of informal, natural communication.
In many cases, phrasal verbs can be replaced by full verbs, but
using them makes your English sound more fluent and native-like.
