Critical discourse analysis Teun A,Van Dijk

Introduction What is critical discourse analysis ? Aims and principles of CDA Concep

Introduction The roots of CDA are in critical theory which is tied up with the Frankfurt school of social research In the 1970s, a group of linguists and literary theorists at the university of East Anglia in England developed the idea of critical linguistics , their approach was based on Halliday ’s systematic functional linguistics

Critical discourse analysis By critical discourse analysis I mean discourse analysis which aims to systematically explore often opaque relationships of causality and determination between (a) discursive practices, events and texts, and (b) wider social and cultural structures, relations and processes; to investigate how such practices, events and texts arise out of and are ideologically shaped by relations of power and struggles over power; and to explore how the opacity of these relationships between discourse and society is itself a factor securing power and hegemony . (pp. 132-3 )

CDA Van Dijk (1993), who prefers the term Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) described it as “a new cross-discipline that comprises the analysis of the text and talk in virtually all disciplines of the humanities and social sciences

CDA It is problem or issue- oriented , rather than paradigm oriented , CDA does not characterize a school, a field , or a subdiscipline of discourse analysis

What is distinctive about CDA compared with other approaches to research ? 1/It openly and explicitly positions itself on the side of dominated and opressed groups and against dominating groups, 2/ Unlike some forms of discourse-based research , CDA does not begin with a fixed theoritical and methodological stance,

General principles of the CDA 1/CDA addresses social problems 2/Power relations are discursive 3/ Discourse constitutes society and culture 4/ discourse does ideological work 5/ Discourse is historical 6/ The link between text and society is mediated 7/ Discourse analysis is interpretative and explanatory 8/ Discourse is a form of social action
