CURRENT TRENDS AND ISSUES IN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Rosemarie t. ocay Focusing on diversity & inclusion, Flexible & alternative learning and skills-based learning
International Education is increasingly prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. This trend is driven by the recognition of the positive impact of fostering inclusive environments, which can attract and retain top talent and promote inclusivity beyond the workplace Diversity and inclusion
Diversity & Inclusion Key aspects and issues include: 1. Global Perspectives : Online learning, in particular, facilitates diverse perspectives and insights by connecting students from around the world. 2. Inclusive Education Frameworks : There's a focus on developing inclusive education agendas that consider social diversity and learning, emphasizing the use of educational technologies to customize and calibrate learning experiences for diverse populations. This includes topics like universal design for learning and adaptive learning environments.
Diversity & Inclusion Key aspects and issues include: 3. Addressing Historical and Current Oppression : International education also grapples with historical and current trends of anti-inclusive educational policies, such as those against anti-bilingual and anti-ethnic studies, and the need for modern activism to combat oppressive educational trends. 4. Workplace Relevance : The importance of diversity extends to the workplace, with data indicating that a significant percentage of full-time employees value working with diverse individuals. Promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace is a priority for many organizations.
Diversity & Inclusion Key aspects and issues include: 5. Human Rights-Based Approach : Promoting respect for diversity within a human rights-based approach is crucial for facilitating intercultural dialogue, preventing conflict, and protecting the rights of marginalized groups, thereby contributing to development goals
Flexible & Alternative Learning The landscape of international education is shifting towards more flexible and alternative learning options, moving away from traditionally structured paths. This is partly due to cultural changes questioning the value of traditional college degrees, higher tuition rates, and a reduction in jobs requiring four-year degrees Trends and Issues include: 1. Online Learning : Online courses offer flexibility, allowing learners to access programs on their own time and often at their own pace, accommodating personal and professional schedules . This includes both synchronous and asynchronous options . 2. Alternative Credentials : There's a growing demand for credentials outside traditional degree programs, such as professional certificates, micro-credentials, bootcamps, and competency-based education programs . These options provide flexible, often online, learning opportunities to develop industry-specific skills in a shorter period.
3. Competency-Based Education (CBE) : CBE allows learners to progress at their own pace, earning credits by demonstrating proficiency in specific topics through assessment tests. This model is particularly attractive to adult learners balancing work and family commitments . 4. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) : MOOCs remain a popular alternative, offering a wide range of topics accessible to anyone, anywhere, often with free options .
Skills-Based Learning The focus on skills-based learning is a significant trend, driven by the rapid development of skills required in the job market and the need for education to keep pace. This often leads to a prioritization of skills-based hiring over traditional credentials Key aspects include: Employability Focus : Universities worldwide are integrating online learning and focusing on skills and practical application to improve student employability. Skills-Based Hiring : Companies are increasingly adopting skills-based hiring practices, looking for candidates with the necessary skills regardless of their degrees or other credentials. This practice can expand the talent pool and increase workforce diversity by removing traditional barriers to entry. Rapid Skill Development : Due to the fast-changing nature of job skills, there's a strong emphasis on continuous learning and upskilling through formats like micro-credentials and specialized courses. Alternative Credentials for Skills : Alternative credentials play a crucial role in providing flexible pathways to acquire and demonstrate specific skills, enabling individuals to upskill or reskill for career advancement. Bridging the Gap : Skills-based learning is seen as a vital approach to bridge the gap between academic offerings and the in-demand skills required by industries, ensuring that education directly prepares individuals for the workforce.
