CURRENT TRENDS AND ISSUES IN NURSING
Introduction If one is to be Educator, one must be a learner, and if one is to Educate in a democracy, one must live by its principles, Education is not just a job- it is a way of life. The objective of Education is not to “shape citizens to the uses of society, but to produce citizens to shape a better society”. Every individual should have access to a type of Education that permits maximum development of his potential and capabilities. Thus, Education is a process, the chief goal of which is to bring about change in the behaviour of the student in the course of a given period of time.
DEFINITION TREND : Trend is an event that occurs overtime and shows a series of fluctuation in its patterns – STANHOPE LANCASTER TREND is a change which takes place consciously in an informal way over the years. ISSUE : An issue is a topic of interest which leads into a discussion and requiring a decision.
Then → Now Then : Traditional approach – objectives with closely orchestrated learning experiences; faculty controlled. Now : Competencies and outcomes; focus on “end product”; faculty-student collaborative learning process
Knowledge and information being major source. Technology more widely used: rapid changes. Greater, faster, access to information. Declining philanthropy (love of mankind). TREND ANALYSIS IN NURSING
CONTD… A more highly Educated public. Continued focus on evidence and value for money. Access to care a key issues. More ethical dilemmas for the health system.

1.Curriculum changes: Flexible curriculum designs are evolving to facilitate diversity of Educational opportunity and overcome barriers of distance and time. CONTD… 2.Innovation in Teaching and Learning: In Nursing Education, lots of innovations are taking place in the areas of teaching and learning. Invariably, these innovations lead to intellectual development, personal development and career development.

Motivated by this situation, accrediting bodies and nurse Educators are expressing deep concern regarding the quality of nursing education.
4.More reliance on technology: Technology exerts greater influences on Nursing Education as a tool for teaching and learning. Judicious use of educational psychology in the development and practice of educational technology has increased its user friendly nature considerably. CONTD…
CONTD… 5.Emphasis on High-Tech-High-Touch Approach: High-tech-high-touch approach in nursing care was devised to preserve the human component of nursing care without undermining the advantages of technological advancements in the field of patient care. Present day nursing education is preparing the students to maintain the human elements of nursing while caring the patients with the help of sophisticated gadgets.
CONTD…. 6.Preperation of global nurses: Nursing Education is all set to reap benefits created by globalization and liberalization by way of preparing global nurses. Many institutions are preparing students with a global perspective through providing learning experience to each student’s knowledge in English along with the attainment of other objectives.
CONTD… 7.Trans-National Acceptance: Nursing educational programmes in one nation is widely accepted by other nations. In fact, this Trans-national acceptance is the main reason for the development of Nursing education in the countries like India.
CONTD… 8.Ensuring a promising career: Unlike many professional educational programs, nursing education ensures a promising career either in India or abroad. A study conducted by Johnson and Johnson reveals that nursing education will maintain this status at least for the coming twenty years.

CONTD… 10.Increased opportunities for higher education/studies: Many institutions are offering programs such as post certificate B.Sc nursing, Msc nursing, M Phil and PhD. An eligible candidate can easily pursue higher education without much time lag.
CONTD… 11.Preference of short term clinical programs than postgraduate programs: Many graduate nurses prefer short term clinical programs of six months to one year duration like trauma nursing, critical care nursing etc: than postgraduate programs, while deciding to go for higher studies. One year mandatory experience after completing B.Sc nursing for getting M.Sc nursing admission also contributed to this trend.
CONTD… 12.Potential shortage of nurse educators: As a result of the existing career opportunities in the service sector when compared to the Educational side, talented nurses are now opting a career in the service side for better prospectus. This may lead to a shortage of nurse educators in the near future. Since the presence of talented nurses in the service sector will do a lot in uplifting the public image of our profession; it is not wise to prevent this flow.
CONTD… 13.Diminishing Government role: Shortage of funds coupled with certain policy decisions has prevented the government from investing further in the field of nursing education. Now, the private sector is playing a dominant role for development of nursing education.
CONTD… 14.Uniformity and standardization: Various universities and nursing boards are conducting nursing programs in a different manner. Even though efforts are on the way bringing about the much needed uniformity and standardization, nothing significant has been achieved so far.
