Single line diagram (SLD) Single Line diagram make the system easy and it provides the reading of the electrical supply and connection. Major electrical equipment of substation: Power transformer Instrument transformer (C.T & P.T) Conductor and Insulator Busbar Lighting arrester (L.A) Circuit breaker (C.B) Relay Capacitor Bank
Current transformer (C.T) : A current transformer is a device that is used for the transformation of current from a higher value into a proportionate current to a lower value. It transforms the high voltage current into the low voltage current due to which the heavy current flows through the transmission lines is safely monitored by the ammeter.
Lightning Arrester : The device which is for the protection of the equipment at the substations against travelling waves such types of device is called lighting arrester . In other words , Lightning arrester diverts the normal high voltage to the ground without affecting the continuity of supply. It is connected between the line and earth i.e in parallel with the equipment to be protected at the substations. Lightning arrester used on systems Above 1000 volts. The SPD (surge protection device ) and Transient voltage surge suppressor (TVSS) are device there are similar to the lightning arrester . The SPD & TVSS are generally used on system below 1000 volts.
POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER(P.T):- A potential transformer can be defined as an instrument transformer used to convert voltage from a higher value to a lower value. This transformer drops the voltage to a safe limit value that can be easily measured with conventional low-voltage instruments such as a voltmeter , wattmeter and watt-hour meter , etc. Potential transformer is also known as Voltage transformer
CIRCUIT BREAKER:- An electrical circuit breaker is a switching device which can be operated manually and automatically for controlling and protecting an electrical power system . As the modern power system deals with huge currents, special attention should be given during designing of a circuit breaker to ensure it is able to safely interrupt the arc produced during the closing of a circuit breaker. This was the basic definition of circuit breaker.
ISOLATOR : – The isolator can be defined as; it is one type of mechanical switch used to isolate a fraction of the electrical circuit when it is required. Isolator switches are used for opening an electrical circuit in the no-load condition. It is not proposed to be opened while current flows through the line. Generally, these are employed on circuit breaker both the ends thus the circuit breaker repair can be done easily without any risk .
RELAY :- Electrical circuit and closes its contacts. These contacts in turns close and complete the circuit breaker trip coil circuit hence make the circuit breaker tripped for A relay is automatic device which senses an abnormal condition of disconnecting the faulty portion of the electrical circuit from rest of the healthy circuit.
GROUND CABLE :- A ground cable is an electrical cable that extends into the ground below your home. Electrical code requirements making ground wiring standard were phased in during the 19060s , so most modern home have grounded outlets and electrical panels throught . The purpose of a ground cable is to give excess electrical charges a safe place to go the solid mass of earth below our feet has a negative electric charge which means positive electrical charges are naturally attracted to it .
CAPACITOR BANK :- As the name implies, a capacitor bank is merely a grouping of several capacitors of the same rating. Capacitor banks may be connected in series or parallel, depending upon the desired rating. As with an individual capacitor, banks of capacitors are used to store electrical energy and condition the flow of that energy. Increasing the number of capacitors in a bank will increase the capacity of energy that can be stored on a single device .
INSULATOR :- An electrical insulator is a material in which electric current does not flow freely. The atoms of the insulator have tightly bound electrons which cannot readily move. Other materials, semiconductors and conductors conduct electric current more easily. The property that distinguishes an insulator is its resistivity; insulators have higher resistivity than semiconductors or conductors. The most common examples are non-metals.
TANSFORMER- device that transfers electric energy from one alternating-current circuit to one or more other circuits, either increasing ( stepping up ) or reducing ( stepping down ) the voltage . Transformers are employed for widely varying purposes; e.g., to reduce the voltage of conventional power circuits to operate low-voltage devices, such as doorbells and toy electric trains, and to raise the voltage from electric generators so that electric power can be transmitted over long distances. .
Electrical Panels- are primarily designed to distribute and control the power for various mechanical implements. These panels are unit products of smart quality raw materials in accordance with industrial quality standards. Electrical control panels are widely used in the industrial and commercial sector for various applications and utilities, including commercial buildings, hospitals, dairies, telecommunications, research laboratories, and others. There are primarily two types of electrical panels available in the market – High Tension (HT) and Low Tension (LT) panels, each one is designed for a specific arrangement and include devices to operate specific equipment.
Electrical Earthing – The process of transferring the immediate discharge of the electrical energy directly to the earth by the help of the low resistance wire is known as the electrical earthing. The electrical earthing is done by connecting the non-current carrying part of the equipment or neutral of supply system to the ground. Mostly, the galvanised iron is used for the earthing. The earthing provides the simple path to the leakage current . The shortcircuit current of the equipment passes to the earth which has zero potential. Thus, protects the system and equipment from damage.
