Degrees of comparison

Types of comparisons: There are three types of comparisons: 1. Positive degree: When a noun or pronoun is not compared we use the basic form of an adjective. Example: Monty is a brave boy. The adjective brave which denotes the simple quality is said to be in Positive Degree.

Comparative degree: When the same quality is compared between two people or groups we use Comparative degree. Example: Babies are happier than children. Superlative degree When the same quality is compared among many persons or things, we use the Superlative degree. Example: Rafflesia is the largest flower in the world. The adjective largest which tells us that of all the flowers, Rafflesia has the highest degree of largeness, is said to be in Superlative degree.

Rules to remember while using comparatives: 1. The Comparative Degree is generally followed by the conjunction than ; as, Shimla is colder than Ooty . Mount Everest is higher than Mount Kanchenjunga. Soma runs faster than John. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA-NC
