Rules: Rounding to the Nearest Tens Look at the ones digit (the digit to the right of the tens digit). • If the digit in the ones place is less than 5, we leave the digit in the tens place unchanged and replace the digit in the ones place with 0. We round down . • If the digit in the ones place is equal to or greater than 5, we add 1 to the digit in the tens place and replace the digit in the ones place with 0. We round up.

Lesson Language Practice Read the following words: rounding round number greater than less than equal to nearest hundreds rounding up rounding down

Video Lesson Motivation

Problem During a community clean-up drive, the volunteers collected 846 pieces of trash from the riverbank. To report the result to the barangay office, they decided to round the number to the nearest hundred . About how many pieces of trash did the volunteers report collecting?

Lesson Proper 846 Let us round this number to the nearest hundreds. We leave the hundreds digit , which is 8, unchanged and replace all the digits to its right (the tens and ones digits) with zero . 846 8 800 00 less than 5

Another example In a community project, volunteers cleaned and planted trees in an area that had 678 pieces of litter before the activity . About how many pieces of litter were there before the project, rounded to the nearest hundred?

Lesson Proper 678 Let us round this number to the nearest hundreds. What is the digit in the tens place ? 678 Is 4 greater than, less than, or equal to 5? 6 7 8 Since 7 is greater than 5, we round up. We add 1 to the hundreds digit, which is 7, and replace all the digits to its right (the tens and ones digits) with zero. 678 7 700 00 greater than 5
