Introduction Education Statistics refers to statistics related to education systems and institutions and their impact on society. Education Statistics encompasses School statistics (Type ,Size ,Location , Equipment) Pupil statistics (Age, Sex, Number, Subject studied, deaths, successful leaves) Teacher statistics(Number, sex, qualification, subjects taught) Budget.( cost of pupil, cost of teacher, cost of building e.t.c )
Why collect Education Statistics Monitoring and Evaluation of Education Systems. Tracks the performance of Education systems using key indicators such as enrollment and literacy rates. Identifying disparities and inequalities. Identifies inequalities in access to education across different socio-demographic groups. Planning and resource allocation. Resources are allocated effectively by the government to determine how funding is needed for teacher recruitment , construction etc. Tracking progress towards national and global goals. Measures progress towards national education targets and goals (SDG4) Informing policy formulation. To make informed decisions about educational reforms and policy development.
Sources of Education Statistics National Sources Population Census. Conducted by the National Statistical Office of a country.(UBOS) Sample Household Surveys. For example Uganda Demographic and Health Surveys Administrative Records. For example data collected by the Ministry of Education and National Council for Higher Education. Educational Research Institutions. Such as Universities .
Sources of Education Statistics International Sources. These collect and analyze data on education system and publish regular reports world wide. They include: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). World Bank. International Labour Organization (ILO).
Education Indicators Quality and learning indicators Literacy rates. Percentage of people in a specified age group who can read and write with understanding. Graduation rates. Percentage of students who successfully complete a particular level of education. Dropout rates. Percentage of students who leave school without completing a particular level of education.
Education Indicators Access and Participation Indicators Gross enrollment ratio. Refers to number of students enrolled in a particular level of education as a percentage of the population that should be enrolled at that education level. Net enrollment ratio. Similar to GER , but excludes who are over aged or under aged for their grade level. Student-teacher ratio. Compares number of students enrolled to the number of employment in a school.
