What is a Word? a word is a basic element of language. It is a speech sound or series of speech sounds that symbolizes and communicates meaning. A word is the smallest unit of language that carries meaning and can stand on its own in communication.

What is the difference between DENOTATION AND CONNOTATION ? Words have two sorts of meaning: denotation and connotation.

DENOTATION

DENOTATION a direct definition of a word in a dictionary — the most basic, direct meaning without any extra feelings or ideas attached. denotation is objective and has no emotion involved

EXAMPLES I love blue car. I invited a clown on my birthday. The snake coiled itself around the branch. The word “BLUE” is a color. The word “CLOWN” is a comic entertainer. a scaly, legless, elongate, and sometimes venomous reptile.

CONNOTATION

Connotation emotional and imaginative association surrounding a word — that go beyond its literal definition. connotation is subjective and involves emotions or ideas.

EXAMPLES When my cat died, I felt so blue . He is always the clown of the family. You should not trust him because he is a snake . The word “BLUE” means sad. The word “CLOWN” means funny or a jolly person. deceitful, traitor, or an untrustworthy person.

Mom barks at us for not doing our task. EXAMPLES “yell or shout”

I’m afraid of the dark . I don’t want to go there. EXAMPLES “characterized by danger or evil forces”
