Describing the Set of Integers and Identifying Real-life Situations that Make Use of It (Comparing Integers) By: Maricel B. Bañados

S - sit attentively and listen when someone is speaking Setting of Standards: T - treat everyone with respect and kindness A - always follow instructions and complete tasks on time R - raise your hand before speaking to avoid creating noise. Remember: Be a STAR .

Read and analyze the sample situation. A group of hikers had a trip up a mountain. At the base of the mountain(elevation:500 meters), the temperature at 9:00 am is +12°C. As they hike up to the midpoint (elevation:1,200 meters), the temperature drops to +3°C by noon. By the time they reach the campsite near the summit (elevation:2,000 meters) at 6:00 pm, the temperature is -4°C.

Rule 1: A positive integer is always greater than a negative integer. Rules in comparing integers:

Rule 2: Zero is always greater than a negative integer and less than a positive integer. Rules in comparing integers:

Rule 3: Compare positive integers as you would compare whole numbers. Rules in comparing integers:

Rule 4: To compare negative integers, the integer with the greater absolute value is the lesser integer. Rules in comparing integers:

Increasing/Ascending Order - means an order from least to greatest/smallest to biggest value. Decreasing/Descending Order - means an order from greatest to least/biggest to smallest value. How to arrange integers?

Groupwork Standard: S - support each other’s ideas and contributions H - help one another and foster respect to each member I - include everyone in the group and value each other’s opinions N - never give up, even if the task is challenging E - encourage yourselves and learn from both successes and setbacks.

Group 1: True or False? Integer Statements Directions: Identify if the integer statement is TRUE or FALSE. 1) -3 > -7 , ________________ 2) +5 < -2 , _________________ 3) 0 < +6 , __________________ 4) -8 > 0 , __________________

Group 2: Compare Us Directions: Compare the value of each pair of integers using > , < , or = . 1) -5 0 2) +9 -8 3) -32 -24 4) -7 +7

Group 3: Integer Sorting Challenge Directions: Work together to arrange the integer cards in ascending or descending order . 1-2. Ascending Order 1) -3, 2, 4, -1 = ______________________ -6, 10, 8, -12 = ______________________ 3-4.Descending Order 3) 0, -1, 9, -3 = ______________________ 4) -3, 0, -6, 6 = ______________________

Comparing Test Scores : In a quiz competition, wrong answers deduct points. Student A has a score of -2 while student B has 0. Who has the higher score? Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living. (Application)

Generalization: How will you compare integers? What are the ways of ordering integers?

Evaluation: Multiple Choice Directions: Read each question and encircle the letter of the correct answer. 1.) Which symbol should be in the blank? -20 ___+20 A. = B. > C. < D. none of the choices 2.) Which sentence is true? A. -7 < -9 B. -100 = 100 C. -3 > 0 D. +19 > 16 3.) What is -4,+14,-14,-1,+4 ordered from greatest to least? A. -4,+4,-14,+14,-1 C. +14,+4,-1,-4,-14 B. +4,-4,+14,-14,-1 D. +14,+4,-14,-4,-1 4.) Which of the following rules in comparing integers is NOT true? A. All positive integers are greater than all negative integers. B. All negative integers are less than all positive integers. C. All positive integers are greater than zero. D. Zero is smaller than all negative integers.

Assignment: Directions: Arrange the following integers from the greatest to the least. 1.) 7, -7, 14, -14, 0, -2 2.) 30, -20, -50, 10, -60, 40 3.) 37, -73, 83, -217, 91, 18 4.) -13, -31, 13, 31, -25, -17
