GloSsary CALL (computer-assisted language learning): Used from the early 1980s, the ‘C’ of CALL highlighted the entry of the computer into the language classroom. Vs Today devices. CMC (computer-mediated communication): The use of communications technologies (e.g. email and later on, video-conferencing and social networking) in collaborative communication projects (ranging from individual to inter-institutional). ICT (information and communications technologies): A more general and neutral term which remains in use today Blended Learning: It refers to a more holistic integration of technology into learning environments: ‘a principled mix of online and classroom-based activities’ ( Gruba and Hinkelman 2012: 46), implemented ideally at institutional/curriculum level.
‘Digital literacy’ refers to a broad set of skills which are continuously developing in line with technological innovation. These include the ability to retrieve, create and contribute resources, handle information systems and evaluate information, collaborate, network, multi-task, problem-solve, ‘code-switch’ on various communications (social) media and intuit the functionality of new applications
Introduction to EFL Teaching with Technology Digital Tools and Resources EFL teaching has embraced the use of digital tools and resources to enhance the learning experience in the classroom. Interactive Learning Digital tools offer interactive learning experiences that engage students and make language learning more enjoyable.
In the context of technology, this has been usefully transferred to a distinction between content and process: ‘content materials as sources of information and data and process materials that act as frameworks within which learners can use their communicative abilities’ ( Reinders and White 2010: 59, italics in original).
Benefits of Using Technology in EFl Increased Student Engagement Technology can make language learning more interactive and engaging, capturing students' attention and motivating them to participate actively in the learning process. Personalized Learning Experiences Technology allows for individualized instruction, catering to each student's unique needs and learning style. It provides opportunities for self-paced learning and adaptive feedback. Access to Authentic Language Resources Technology provides access to a wide range of authentic language resources, such as online articles, videos, and audio recordings. This exposure to real-world language use enhances students' language proficiency and cultural understanding.
VISUAL APPEAL: Design material should be visually appealing to engage learners and create a positive learning experience. CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS: Provide clear and concise instructions to guide learners on how to use the design material effectively. USER- FRIENDLY INTERFACE: The design material should have a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate and understand. INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES: Include interactive activities that encourage active participation and practice of language skills. MULTIMEDIA INTEGRATION: Integrate multimedia elements such as images, videos, and audio to enhance learning and make it more interactive. FEEDBACK MECHANISM: Incorporate a feedback mechanism that provides immediate feedback to learners to support their learning process. Design Principles for Technological Environments
Examples of Design Material for Technological Environments Interactive Games Engage students with interactive games that promote active learning and reinforce language skills. Multimedia Presentations Create captivating multimedia presentations that incorporate audio, video, and interactive elements to enhance the learning experience. Online Quizzes Utilize online quizzes to assess student comprehension and provide immediate feedback for effective learning.
Tips for Teachers of EFL Provide Clear Instructions When using technology in the classroom, it is important to provide clear and concise instructions to students. This helps ensure that they understand the task or activity and can use the technology effectively. Scaffold Learning Activities Scaffolding is a teaching technique that involves breaking down complex tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. When using technology, teachers can scaffold learning activities by providing step-by-step instructions, examples, and support materials. Monitor Student Progress Technology can provide valuable tools for monitoring student progress. Teachers can use online platforms, apps, or software to track student performance, provide feedback, and identify areas for improvement.
Activity Do a reseacrh about one of these AI app. What it is use for ? Main characteristics ? Make a short presentation using any technological tool to share this information . You should mention the use and give the steps to work with it . Think one of the activities you have done in language lessons and give an example of how this app can be used . You have to mention the aim , the topic or communicative function of the activity and which skill are you developing with it . Use one of the following tools in order to assess the information you have provide to the group . Kahoot , Plickers , GimKit , Socrative , Classdojo , Mentimeter
