Finding Detailed
Information in A Text
Specific facts or supporting details in a passage.
These details are usually found directly in the text
(explicit information), not implied. The question may
ask about who, what, when, where, or how
something happens in the passage.
FYI, detailed information is...

Examples of details to look for:
Dates, times, or numbers
Names of people, places, or objects
Reasons, examples, or evidence mentioned
Definitions, descriptions, or processes
?????? Unlike inference questions, detail questions don’t
require interpretation — the answer is already written
in the passage.

Let’s Practice!
Which of the following was a safety regulation introduced
after the Titanic disaster?
a. Ships must travel slower in the North Atlantic
b. Ships must avoid iceberg zones
c. Ships must carry enough lifeboats for all passengers
d. Ships must install stronger steel hulls
What time did the Titanic strike the iceberg?
a. 10:00 p.m., April 14
b. 11:40 p.m., April 14
c. 2:20 a.m., April 15
d. 12:00 a.m., April 14

The Titanic was one of the largest and most luxurious ships ever built in
the early 20th century. Constructed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in
Belfast, Ireland, the Titanic measured about 269 meters in length and
weighed over 46,000 tons. It was designed to carry more than 2,200
passengers and crew. The ship was equipped with advanced safety
features for its time, including watertight compartments and remotely
activated watertight doors, which led many to believe it was “unsinkable.”
On April 10, 1912, the Titanic departed from Southampton, England, on its
maiden voyage to New York City. Four days later, on April 14, at 11:40 p.m.,
the ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. The collision caused several
compartments to flood, and within less than three hours, the Titanic sank.
Tragically, more than 1,500 people lost their lives, while only about 700
survived, largely due to a shortage of lifeboats.
The disaster led to major changes in maritime safety. New international
regulations required ships to carry enough lifeboats for all passengers,
conduct regular lifeboat drills, and maintain 24-hour radio communication.
The sinking of the Titanic became one of the most studied maritime
tragedies in history, inspiring books, films, and countless investigations.

Stated Information
Unstated Information
Directly mentioned in the
text (explicit fact).
Not mentioned at all (extra
detail, assumption, or
irrelevant fact).
In TKA test, you may see
questions where the
answer choices include:
Unstated Information
Contradicts what is written
in the text.

Tips for Answering
Locate keywords
Use scanning to find the part of the text where
the topic is mentioned.
Check wording
carefully
A small change (e.g., “always” instead of
“sometimes”) can make an option false.
Beware of background
knowledge
Only choose what the passage says, not what
you know from outside.
Differentiate
“unstated” vs. “false”
Unstated: The text doesn’t mention it at all.
False: The text says something different.
Eliminate distractors
Wrong options often copy words from the
passage but change the meaning.

Let’s Practice!
Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
a. Soldiers used fire signals at night.
b. Some gates along the Wall were trade checkpoints.
c. UNESCO listed the Great Wall as a World Heritage Site in
1987.
d. The exact number of workers who built the Wall.
When were the most famous sections of the Great Wall built?
a. During the Han Dynasty
b. During the Ming Dynasty
c. In the 7th century BC
d. In 1987

The Great Wall of China is one of the most remarkable architectural
achievements in history. Stretching over 21,000 kilometers, it was not built all
at once but constructed in sections by different dynasties over many
centuries. The earliest walls date back as far as the 7th century BC, while the
most famous sections were built during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644).
The main purpose of the Wall was to protect Chinese states and empires
from invasions by nomadic tribes from the north. Soldiers were stationed at
watchtowers, where they could signal enemy movements using smoke during
the day and fire at night. In addition to its defensive function, the Wall also
facilitated trade control, as certain gates along the Wall became checkpoints
for merchants traveling on the Silk Road.
Despite its strength, the Wall was not always successful in stopping
invasions. Over time, natural erosion and human activities damaged many
sections. Today, some parts have been restored and attract millions of tourists
annually, while other parts remain in ruins. UNESCO designated the Great Wall
a World Heritage Site in 1987, recognizing its cultural and historical
significance.
