What is “Disease”? Find a partner and write down your own definition of disease

Disease is a deviation from the normal health of an animal.

Why is it Important to Keep Animals Healthy? Unhealthy animals cost money! Millions of dollars are spent every year on keeping animals healthy Maintaining proper animal welfare is important to breeders, producers and owners. PROFITABILITY!

What Are Some Causes of Disease? Germs: bacteria, viruses, protozoa Parasites: worms, insects Infestations: external parasites Infectious: internal disease Injury: handling, facilities Inherited Genes Poor Nutrition: easiest to correct Toxic materials in plants, nitrogen content Chemicals for insect control

How Do We Detect Unhealthy Animals? In groups of 2-3 make a T chart with characteristics (visual and non-visual) of healthy vs. unhealthy animals. Think about all body systems and the full animal! Once done, we will discuss as a class!
