Determiners

Determiners We have bought a new house. Determiners are words placed in front of nouns to give more information about the noun. They help to identify, specify, or quantify the noun in some way. There are two types of determiners - specific and general . My house is miles from anywhere. Keep away from the derelict house.

Specific Determiners (The Definite Article) The Queen lives in Buckingham Palace. Specific determiners refer to a specific noun when the reader knows exactly which noun you are referring to . The most frequently used specific determiner is ‘ the ’- which is often referred to as ‘ the definite article ’. We use ‘ the ’ because we are being specific about which Queen.

Demonstrative Determiners Demonstrative determiners are also specific. They relate to the location of the noun that you are describing. I love that shirt. Those children a re playing football . ‘ that ’ indicates that the shirt is nearby. ‘ Those ’ is used to be specific about which children. that those this these

Possessive Determiners Possessive determiners are also specific. They relate to the ownership of the noun that you are describing. T he Artist is wearing her carnival outfit. Hands off...it is my bun. ‘ her ’ indicates the ownership of the outfit. ‘ my ’ is used to indicate the owner of the bun. my your her his our its their

Interrogative Determiners What books do you like to read? Which restaurant did you go to? Interrogative determiners are used before a noun or noun phrase to ask questions . We use ‘ which ’ or ‘ what ’ as determiners to ask a question about a specific group of people or things. What Which

Number Determiners When used as determiners, both cardinal (e.g., one, two, three) and ordinal (e.g., first, second, third) numbers help specify or limit nouns and pronouns by indicating exact quantities or positions in a sequence. Sima was late to class three times this semester. The manager approved two proposals for funding. This is the second chapter of the novel. She missed the last two meetings .

General Determiners (The Indefinite Article) General determiners don’t refer to a specific noun. The most frequently used general determiners are ‘ a ’ or ‘ an ’- which are often referred to as ‘ the indefinite article ’. A robot is made of metal. We use ‘ a ’ if we are talking generally about robots. If we were being specific about one particular robot then we would use the definite article ‘ the ’. An alien landed on our planet . We use ‘an’ if the noun it precedes starts with a vowel (a, e, i , o or u) to make it easier to say.

Quantifiers Like determiners, quantifiers are words that precede and modify nouns. We use quantifiers when we want to give someone information about the number of something: how much or how many. Quantifiers with Count Nouns: many apples a few chairs several students a couple of pencils a number of questions a majority of voters Quantifiers with Non-Count Nouns: not much traffic not much noise a little salt a little rain a good deal of stress Quantifiers with both nouns: all of the books / all of the water none of the apples / none of the sugar some students / some milk enough chairs / enough patience a lot of people / a lot of coffee lots of ideas / lots of rice plenty of cookies / plenty of time

Quantifiers : Quiz Question 2. Decide where the quantifiers are: We have got some chickens in our garden. After lunch, I had a y oghurt. Santa has many r e i nd ee r . There are very few sea turtles left in the wild.
