Creating Subject Specific Activities of Integration NCDC May 2023
In this session participants should be able to: 01 Remind ourselves of the characteristics of a good activity of Integration 02 Develop an Activity of Integration for any class from S 1 to S4. Develop a scoring grid for the AOI. 03 Develop a scoring grid for a given activity of integration.
ACTIVITY 1: Developing an Activity of Integration In teaching subject groups, Choose a topic from your subject syllabus (preferably S.3 or S4) and develop an Activity of Integration to assess it. Prepare an Assessment Grid for the AOI developed in (i) above. Present your outputs in a plenary session and critique each other’s work .
Things to Note when Developing an AOI An AOI should assess a single competency Relate the scenario to the local environment /context Include relevant r eadable g raphics , text(s) or statistics where applicable Use c lear and p recise l anguage
Things to Note cont’d Make the task clear. Do No t creat any room for misinterpretation /or double interpretation The task should require an extended response from the learner . Do Not u se d ifficult or u ncommon n ames Use as Little Punctuation as Possible Employ the Third p erson in the scenario
Activity 2 - Brain Storming on AOI Basing on your outputs for Activity 1 above, respond to the following questions: What is an Activity of Integration? What are the salient components of an Activity of Integration? What are the characteristics of a good A ctivity of I ntegration?
Key Learning Points: What is an AOI? An Assessment task done by the learners usually at the end of a topic. It is takenindividually and under structured conditions. Aimed at determining the degree to which the learner has acquired the topical competency; by solving a contextualised problem situation presented. Can be diadactic (drill) or evaluative Comprises the: Problem situation (scenario), Support and Task
Components of an AOI Problem situation/Scenario Support material Task
C haracteristics of a good AOI It should be: Partinent - connected to the competency, Complex - requires articulation of several resources/learnings, Specialised - requires the learner to articulate specific resources linked to the subject and level of learning; not common sense ,
C haracteristics of a good AOI Perplexing / Novel - the learner should never have met the problem situation before), Finalised through a concrete task - has a clear expected output and conditions for resolution, Motivating (significant in the eyes of the learner, and has a social function-not theoretical/academic in nature)
Developing a Scoring Grid for AOI Determine the expected response/output. Generate the basis of assessment and possible responses for the AOI . Clearly spell out the success/assessment criteria. Set the indicators of success for each criterion and calibrate the possible maximum score accordingly. Observe t he principal of “ local independence ” while determining the criteria for scoring the task.
