Systemic racism in the education system What is systemic racism?
It is a reality. As a theory, it is based on the research-backed claim that America was founded as a racist society, that racism is therefore embedded in all social institutions, structures, and social relationships within our society. .
¿ In what areas do we most confront racism? racism in society is schools, as these can perpetuate racial inequality, so it is important to train educators to deal with the issue in the classroom
Why do we fall short in teaching about racism? It's hard to teach about racism when we don't have the openness and freedom in the classroom to talk about its history. As teachers we denounce racism as something wrong and without scientific basis, but we leave aside all the work done over centuries that tried to sustain racial differences through science.
Race doesn't exist, but it does matter. Education professionals are prisoners of the belief that mere mention of the issue of race has a high potential to exaggerate differences among students from various ethnic groups, as well as minimize similarities, exacerbate interracial problems, and generate unnecessary conflict.
Science may have already confirmed that races do not exist, but taking that scientific truth as the only admissible argument to combat racism ignores the social truth of the millions of people who are devalued daily by a concept without scientific validity, but with a social weight so great that it divides humanity according to a criterion as absurd as absolute: the color of the skin.
