Diary Entry Class 9 English
WALT: To identify the format and create a diary entry on a given topic.
What is Diary Writing? Diary writing is a short composition that records the writer's thoughts, reactions and feelings about the activities in which he or she has taken part during a particular day. It is one of the most personal and informal categories of writing. A diary writing can be based on an experience, a scene, a description or a narration of a certain event that the writer considers worth writing. A diary is generally not meant to be read by anyone else than the writer. An example of a diary is the diary kept by Anne Frank, a Jewish girl, for more than two years while hiding during the Second World War.
Features of Diary Entry: A Diary Entry has the following features: • It is written in informal and creative language, but still follows a specific format. • It is always written in the first person and usually in the past tense, as it is a record. • Mention day, date and time (usually at the end of the day) at the top left corner of the diary. • Address the diary as 'Dear Diary', if you like. • The important events are usually written in chronological order, using vivid descriptions where necessary. • The entry may include the writer's point of view, comments on the events and/or a final comment about expectations of the future. • It ends with the writer writing his or her first name.

Thursday, 11th September, 10:00 PM Dear Diary I am really happy today. It was the annual day function in my school today and I was the anchor for the function. I was anxious in the morning as it was the first time that I was given a chance to be the anchor. However, my teacher helped me to overcome my shyness. Fortunately, everything went really well. I started off confidently and maintained my confidence throughout. Everyone was pleased with the way I delivered the speech and vote of thanks. I was very excited to listen to the golden words of advice that our Chief Guest, the City Mayor, gave us. As always, everyone was impressed by his speech. I felt really lucky to experience the presence of such an influential person of our city. It was a wonderful day at school. I am very tired now. See you tomorrow! Arpit
