DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POPULATION AND SAMPLE STATISTICS

1. When a housewife buys a cavan rice, she examines only a handful of rice from the cavan to find out whether it is of good quality or not.
2. When a doctor examines a patient’s blood, he or she extracts only a few cubic centimeters of blood to find out what causes the patient’s illness.
3. When a cook wants to know the taste of the food he or she is preparing, he or she samples a spoonful of the food.
4. When a teacher wants to know the common height of grade 7 students in Rebokon AVHS, he or she gets only a sample of 75 grade 7 students.
5. When a researcher wants to know the IQ of the students in the science high schools, he or she gets sample of 50 grade 7 t 10 students from each of the science high schools in Zamboanga del Sur.
The handful of rice, a few cubic centimeters of blood, a spoonful of food, 75 grade 7 students, and 50 grade 7 students are called samples . The cavan of rice, the patients blood, the food, the grade 7 students, and the students in science high schools in Zamboanga del Sur, from which samples are taken are called population .
Population, as used in statistics, refers to a set of people, objects, measurements, or happenings that belong to a defined group. Sample is any subset of elements drawn by some appropriate method from a defined population.
