Dilip Shanghvi : The Medicine Man

Historical background Shanghvi earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calcutta. He spent his childhood and college life with his parents in the Burrabazar locality of Kolkata. He is an alumnus of J. J. Ajmera High School and Bhawanipur Education Society College, where he did his schooling and graduation, respectively. Shanghvi started by helping his father in his business ,which was a wholesale dealership of medicines ,mainly generic drugs in Kolkata .It was during this work that he thought of manufacturing his own drugs instead of selling products made by others.

He began his business journey by taking the biggest risk of his life. To begin with he carried on his father’s legacy and started off as a mere wholesaler of pharmaceutical products in Kolkata. Hence after this he decided to go against the wind and with just two marketing executives began manufacturing and selling lifestyle and psychiatry drugs. Now the whole idea behind manufacturing these drugs was only to show their presence in a market where not many doctors prescribed his medicines . Tackling such situations, in the first year itself they did a business of about INR 7 lakhs. By 90s ,Sun pharma had begun to make its presence felt! And in 1993,the visionary reinvested its entire profit of INR 4 crores in setting up his own research centre . During that time, the company had a turnover of around INR 50-60 crores. JOURNEY

By then, the company had smartly expanded from just psychiatry drugs to medicines for heart, respiratory complications, diabetes, stomach, and intestines, etc. too! Dilip Shanghvi had an ideology to retain his customers :Man’s body is just like a car. And thus he preferred to focus on those drugs that people have to continue taking for a longer duration. Evidently, Dilip Shanghvi coming from a commerce Background did not have a much knowledge about the pharma Industry; But to cover that he retained people who where experts in this field. He prefers to give opportunities to his own staff members instead of job poaching.
