BACKGROUND Established in Germany and France at the late 19th Century in Europe. Developed By Maximilian Berlitz . Developed as a reaction to Grammar-Translation Method.

Definition The Direct Method is a method of foreign language teaching which insist that only the target language should be used in the classroom and no use of native language is allowed Direct method is named Direct method because meaning should be connected directly with the target language without translation into the native language Direct Method also known as Natural Method , Anti-grammatical Method , Phonetical Method, Reform Method

GOALS Produce language learners who are skilled in oral communication. Teach the learners how to think in the target language Teach how to use the target language spontaneously while communicating orally.

Key Features Medium of instruction is the Target language. Speaking and listening skills are emphasized. Vocabulary is taught through context. Grammar is taught inductively. No translation is allowed. Correct pronunciation is emphasized. New teaching points are introduced orally first.

Techniques Read aloud. Question and answer exercise. Conversation Practice. Fill in the blank Exercise. Dictation. Paragraph writing.

Strengths Enhanced Communication skills. Natural language acquisition. pronunciation and fluency. Contextual learning. Active student participation.

Limitations Over emphasis on oral communication. Difficult for average or below average students. Requires competent teacher. Expensive. Unsuccessful in early stage of learning.
