Discovering the Scientific Method Thinking and Working Like a Scientist!
What is the Scientific Method? 3 The scientific method is a systematic way to investigate problems, ask questions, and discover answers through observation and experimentation.
Our Problem – A Real-Life Situation 4 Scenario:You planted a seed in a cup. It started growing well, but then stopped.
Step 1 – Asking a Question 5 What are you curious about? Example: Why did my plant stop growing?
Step 2 – Gather Information and Sources 6 What do you already know? What do others say? Look at books, ask adults, or use reliable internet sources. Find out what plants need to survive.
Step 3 – Formulate a Hypothesis 7 What is your educated guess? Hypothesis: I think the plant stopped growing because it didn’t get enough sunlight.
Step 4 – Design an Experiment and Test the Hypothesis 8 Introduce Vocabulary: Independent variable: the one we change (sunlight) Dependent variable: the one we measure (plant growth) Controlled variables: all the things that stay the same
Step 5 – Record Results 9 Write or draw what happens each day. Use a table or drawing. Note things like plant height, leaf color, and changes.
Step 6 – Analyze the Data 10 What do the results mean? Example: The plant with sunlight is healthy, the other is dying.
Step 7 – Draw a Conclusion 11 What did you learn from the experiment? Conclusion: Yes, the plant needs sunlight to grow. The hypothesis was correct.
Step 8 – Communicate the Results 12 Share what you found out! Write a reportPresent to the class Create a drawing or chart
