Tips for Resume Writing

Recruiters receive hundreds, if not thousands, of resumes for a single position. And do you know that employers spend only about 10 - 15 seconds to review a resume??

With a well-written resume, you can catch the attention of the viewer in this short time. If your resume doesn’t attract the employer, you lose out on that opportunity.

Why is a resume needed? Summarizes your educational and professional qualifications indicating why YOU are the BEST candidate Designed to get you face to face with the employer Your opportunity to make a favorable first impression

Your resume should: Communicate who you are and what you have to offer Highlight your strong points: accomplishments, work history, education and training Include only items that directly pertain to the position for which you are applying Not include personal pronouns ( ie . I, me, my, our) Contain results-oriented action verbs ALWAYS be accompanied by a cover letter!!!

Keep it Categorized Before you begin creating or editing your resume, understand the key categories an employer will scan for. At a minimum, every resume should include the following: Contact Experience Education Skills

Keep It Concise Less is more – quality over quantity Pertinent Information Only Express clearly how you meet requirements

Keep It Consistent When you begin to layout out your resume, determine a font that looks professional (Times New Roman and Calibri are great choices). Make sure that this font is used throughout the entire document.

Resume Do’s and Don’ts DO present yourself accurately Make it easy to read and pleasing to the eye – bullets! Tailor content to the employer PROOFREAD DON’T include salary requirements Include references – always on separate sheet LIE Overcrowd the page with information
