Dr B C Roy A renowned Physician educationist , social reformer & a freedom fighter He was one of the makers of morden India He was an able administrator & an icon of morality & ethics in public life
Personal life Born on 1 st July 1882 Bankipore Patna in Bihar Youngest of the five children Mother passed away when he was only 14 years Father Mr Prakesh Chandra who was an Excisie inspector played the role of mother as well taught him to do house hold chores which helped him to work in public life.
Career: A brilliant student, he passed his Entrance examination from Patna Collegiate School in 1897 In 1901 he graduated from Patna College with Honors in Mathematics and applied to both Bengal Engineering College Shibpur and Calcutta Medical College He was accepted to both institutions but opted to go to medical school. Dr.Bidhan left for Calcutta in June 1901 While at medical school Dr Roy came upon an inscription which read, "Whatever thy hands findeth to do, do it with thy might.“ Dr B C Roy was deeply impressed by these words and they became a source of inspiration for him throughout his life .
Dr.Bidhan sailed for England with only Rs. 1,200 in February of 1909 intending to enroll himself at St. Bartholomew's hospital for further education. The Dean, reluctant to accept a student from Asia, rejected Dr.Bidhan's application. Dr. Roy did not loose heart. Again and again he submitted his application until finally the Dean, after 30 admission requests, accepted Dr.Bidhan to the college. Within two years and three months, Dr.Bidhan completed his M.R.C.P. and F.R.C.S. and returned home from England in 1911. On his return he taught at the Calcutta Medical College
Contributions In Medicine: Dr B C Roy contribution to Medical Profession and Indian Medical Association are immense. He was instrumental in starting IMA in the year 1928 and making it the largest professional organization in the country Served as Professor of Medicine, Fellow of American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University. The Doctorate of Science was conferred upon him in 1944 . Received Bharat Ratna in 1961. Recognizing his service the Government of India decalred July 1 st as Doctors Day in India.
In Politics: 2 nd Chief Minister of West Bengal He entered Politics in 1925 & was elected to All India Congress Committee -1928 Effienciently conducted Civil disobedience Movement in Bengal & was arrested in 1930 His contribution made leaps & bounds in Free Education,medical care ,better roads & water supply A great architect of West Bengal -- who founded three eminent cities -- Durgapur Kalyani and Bidhan-nagar .
Inspite of his political schedules, he continued to serve the Medical Profession by devoting one hour everyday for the cause of poor patients and the profession. He gifted his house to the people of Bengal in the year 1961. Died on 1 st July 1962 at the age of 80 Kolkata , West Bengal
Post-Independence The B.C. Roy National Award was instituted in 1976 for work in the area of medicine, politics, science, philosophy, literature and arts. The Dr. B.C. Roy Memorial Library and Reading Room for Children in the Children's Book Trust, New Delhi, was opened in 1967. Today, his private papers are part of the Archives at the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library , at Teen Murti House , Delhi.
Message to the youth Dr. Roy believed that the youth of India would determine the future of the nation. He felt that the youth must not take part in strikes and fasts but should study and commit themselves to social work At his Convocation Address on December 15, 1956 at the University of Lucknow Dr. Roy said "My young friends, you are soldiers in the battle of freedom-freedom from –fear , ignorance, frustration and helplessness.
CONCLUSION His 30 attempts to enter Medical School in England is an example of self belief & not giving up . Let us all pledge ourselves to serve the Medical Profession and the Country in the golden path shown by Dr BC Roy.
