What is E-Learning ??? Previous E-learning experience?

Definitions ! E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching . The Information and communication systems , whether networked or not, serve as specific media to implement the learning process [1] e-Learning is the use of technology to enable people to learn anytime and anywhere. e-Learning can include training, the delivery of just-in-time information and guidance from experts.

Definition ……. learning or education program by electronic means. E-learning involves the use of a computer or electronic device (e.g. a mobile phone) in some way to provide training, educational or learning material. (Derek Stockley 2003) A learning environment supported by continuously evolving, collaborative processes focused on increasing individual and organizational performance.

Acronyms like….. CBT ( Computer-Based Training ), IBT ( Internet-Based Training ) or WBT ( Web-Based Training ) as elearning , Elearning , and eLearning.

E-learning can involve a greater variety of equipment than online training or education, for as the name implies, "online" involves using the Internet or an Intranet. CD-ROM and DVD can be used to provide learning materials.

Major uses of e-learning enabled transfer of skills and knowledge enable people to learn anytime and anywhere. e-Learning can include training, the delivery of just-in-time information and guidance from experts

E-Learning is and in not ! Non Linear - Learners determine how, what and when they access information. Linear - Learners must move through presentation in a predetermined sequence.

Learner Controlled - Learner controls their own interaction with the content and presentation. Learner has opportunities for reflection and application. Instructor Controlled - Instructor determines sequence, content, media and timing. Long simulations, or animations or Flash presentations are instructor controlled.

E-learning is/not …….. Dynamic Process - Transformed, personalized, customized on demand in response to learner and environmental variables. Available on demand and just in time. Static Event - Learning is not an event that only happens when scheduled training occurs, it happens continuously.

E-learning is/not ……. Informal - Recognizes that at least 70% of learning occurs in meetings, in the corridors and break rooms, through collaboration, in situational communities. Formal - Learning occurs w/o formal training presentations. Training is not the same as learning.

E-learning is/not ……. Multi Channel Learner <-> Learner, Content <-> Learner, Expert <-> Learner, Expert <-> Content, Expert <-> Expert Single Channel - Trainer to Attendee

E-learning Material and applications! E-learning is essentially the computer and network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge. E-learning applications and processes include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classroom opportunities and digital collaboration.

Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio.

E-learning methods! No single e-learning method is best for every learning need. You will most likely need to use several e-learning technologies as well as traditional learning methods. A blended learning program combines e-learning and traditional learning methods. blended learning can provide the convenience, speed and cost effectiveness of e-learning with the personal touch of traditional learning.

Some of E-learning Mode of delivery

Virtual Classroom A virtual classroom duplicates the capabilities found in a real classroom. A virtual classroom provides: A place to meet: Students and teachers use their computers to go to a virtual meeting place instead of a classroom.

Virtual …… Lecture: Teachers can choose from a variety of synchronous technologies including: Slide presentation Audio and video conferencing Application sharing Shared whiteboard

Audio and Video Conferencing Audio conferencing can be implemented in two ways: Computers connected to the Internet. Common names for this kind of implementation are IP Audio Conferencing or Voice-over-IP. Phone conferences. People dial the same number to participate in an audio conference. Video conferencing can also be implemented in two ways: Computers connected to the Internet. The computers need digital cameras. Special video conferencing devices that connect over the Internet or over phone lines. .

Chat, Shared Whiteboard, Application Sharing Chat allows several people to communicate with each other A shared whiteboard lets a group of people communicate by typing comments, drawing, highlighting and pointing. A shared whiteboard is a common feature within virtual classroom software packages. You can demonstrate how to use software applications to remote learners with application sharing.

Advantage VS Disadvantage

Advantage work and learn at their own pace without the unyielding time restrictions of traditional learning. Because e-learning provides access to learning materials at any time, students have the flexibility to schedule around families, jobs and other activities. Accessibility it provides. Students can learn from anywhere in the world. For students who wish to study in a different country. Students have less clothing and driving expenses than with traditional learning.

Disadvantage This is especially true for students who have difficulty with time management and procrastination. It is technology Dependent , Some people do not have ready access to a computer and Internet connection. And some who do have the required equipment feel ill-equipped to use it. Lack of interaction between teacher Some students need the immediate feedback that interaction provides

E-learning and Africa Distance learning can increase the number of people in Education in Africa. The biggest obstacle in Africa is really the band width. Unstable electrical supply Lack of equipment and computer , and also internet access.

Research has shown that: • E-learning is a viable mode of delivery in African Universities. • E-learning is well accepted by students and staff. • Well designed e-learning content enhances learning. • Content development - needs commitment from instructors. • Instructor availability to deal with student queries is crucial
