Guide QUESTIONS: 1. What do you love most about your home? 2. What are the things your home can provide similar to what the Earth can? 3. Is water important to your everyday life at home? 4. What happens if you don’t have water at home? 5. Similarly, what is the role of water for life to exist on Earth?

UNIQUE FEATURES OF EARTH that are important for life Surface liquid water Atmospheric oxygen Plate tectonics (4) Climate stability (5) Appropriate distance from the Sun (6) Moderate global temperature (15o C) (7) Minerals and Energy resources

1. Presence of surface liquid water Earth is the only planet covered mainly with 75% surface water). Water is es- sential for life. Almost all living things need water in order to survive.

2. Atmospheric oxygen Earth’s atmospheric composition is suitable for life to exist. The Earth’s atmosphere plays a vital role in regulating the temperature by providing a blanket of gases that not only protects us from excessive heat and harm- ful radiation from the sun, but also traps heat rising from the Earth's interior, keep- ing us warm.

3. Plate tectonics Earth has Nickel-Iron core, which produces its magnetic field. Materials on Earth including its water and atmospheric gasses are contained inside because of magnetic field. Materials also from the inside of the Earth is circulated to its surface through volcanic activity, geosphere movement like earthquake or through hot spots and plate boundaries

4. Climate stability Climate on Earth is mostly stable and predictable throughout the year. Other countries of the world has four seasons to enjoy. This include summer, autumn, win- ter and spring. Other tropical countries have wet and dry seasons. These rotational pattern of weather and climate make life on Earth possible.

5. Appropriate distance from the sun Earth’s right distance make life on earth possible. Being the 5th planet in the solar system makes temperature here just appropriate for living organism.

6. Moderate global temperature The average temperature on Earth is 61 degrees Fahrenheit (15o Celsius). Global temperature data comes from thousands of observation stations around the world. It was observed that this temperature is increasing every year.

7. Minerals and energy sources Energy and mineral resources are vital to modern society, and it is the role of a geologist to locate these resources for human benefit. As environmental concerns have become more prominent, the value of the geologist has not decreased, as they are still vital in locating and identifying the least intrusive methods of extraction.

QUIZ TIME

ASSESS YOUR learning Roque, a Senior High School learner explored the Science Centrum and discovered a lot of exhibits which are outputs of previous students. He is examining and scrutinizing all of these outputs about the characteristics of the liveable Earth when his other classmates entered and asked him these questions. Where will Roque bring his classmates? Each of exhibit area present topics, these are listed below.

ASSESS YOUR learning Which the following characteristics of life enables the Planet Earth to contain materials within and inside it. Where will Roque lead her classmates? A. Exhibit A B. Exhibit B C. Exhibit C D. None of these

ASSESS YOUR learning 2. Which of the following characteristics of Earth enables the living things breathe? A. Exhibit A B. Exhibit B C. Exhibit C D. None of these

ASSESS YOUR learning 3. Which of the following characteristics of Earth enables the living things to process to their food A. Exhibit A B. Exhibit B C. Exhibit C D. None of these

EARTH’s SUBSYSTEMS Earth is a system and it has parts . These different parts interact and are interrelated to one another. The changes in the one part cause changes to the other parts. Their interconnection to one another plays a crucial role in the maintenance of the balanced Earth.

El niÑo phenomenon

El niÑo phenomenon 1. What do you know about El Niño Phenomenon?

El niÑo phenomenon 2. What components or parts of the Earth are involved in the phenomenon above?

El niÑo phenomenon 3. Are these parts play important roles for the maintenance of balance in Earth? How?

El niÑo phenomenon 4. Explain the connectedness or the interrelationship among these subsys-tems .

FOUR (SUBSYSTEMS OF EARTH 1. Atmosphere makes up of all the gases in our planet. 2. Geosphere includes all the soil, rocks, and minerals present in the crust to the core of the Earth. 3. Hydrosphere is composed of all the water on Earth in any form: water vapor, liquid water, and ice. 4. Biosphere is comprised of all living things and the areas where they are found. It includes all microbes, plants, and animals. Matter and energy move and cycle between the four different

1. ATMOSPHERE The word atmosphere comes from the Greek roots atmos which means gas, and sphaira which means globe or ball. The atmosphere makes up of all the gases on Earth. It extends outward about 10 000 km from the surface of the Earth. It is composed of 78.1% nitrogen, 20.9% oxygen, 0.9% argon, 350 ppm carbon dioxide, and other components.

1. ATMOSPHERE The atmosphere has different layers – troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere.

2. GEOSPHERE Geo is a Greek root which means ground. Geosphere includes all the soil, rocks, and minerals present in the crust to the core of the Earth. It is divided into three layers namely crust, mantle, and core.

3. HYDROSPHERE Hydro is a Greek root which means water. Hydrosphere is composed of all the water on Earth in any form: water vapor, liquid water, and ice. It is comprised of 97.5% saltwater and 2.5% freshwater. It includes all bodies of water such as oceans, lakes, rivers, and marshes. Clouds and rain are also part of the hydrosphere.

3. HYDROSPHERE The water on Earth is constantly moving. It moves through the oceans in currents. Warm waters in the tropics move toward the poles while cold water from the polar regions move toward the tropics. Water also flows into streams and rivers and through the rocks underground. It can also move from the Earth’s surface to the air by evaporation and then fall back to Earth as precipitation. It even moves into and out of the bodies of organisms.

4. BIOSPHERE Organisms interact with the other spheres to survive. Many organisms need oxygen and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to carry out life processes. Water, which comprises the hydrosphere, is also important to organ-isms. Finally, the rocks, soil, and minerals constitute the geosphere also sup-port life.

Four subsystems of the earth

QUIZ TIME

ASSESS YOUR learning Early this January, most of the people in Southern Luzon was affected by the massive destructive and explosive eruption of Taal Volcano. The eruption brought huge destructions not only to properties and livelihoods of the people in the area but at the same time have taken the lives of some of our country-men. Ashes reached not only the nearby towns in Batangas but also in major cities in Manila. Because of this face masks are in demand in the area. Force evacuation was executed by the local government unit (LGU) especially at the 6-kilometer danger zone. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

ASSESS YOUR learning 1. Which of the Earth’s subsystem is affected the most when ashes are coming out the volcano? A. Atmosphere and geosphere B. Geosphere and Biosphere C. Atmosphere, Hydrosphere and Biosphere D. Geosphere and Hydrosphere

ASSESS YOUR learning 2. Lava flowing from the mouth of the volcano to the different areas at different distances depending on its volume, which Earth subsystem is first to be affect-ed? A. Hydrosphere B. Geosphere C. Biosphere D. Atmosphere

ASSESS YOUR learning 3. Sulfur dioxide is the poisonous gas released after its massive explosive eruption, which subsystem is mostly affected? A. Atmosphere B. Biosphere C. Hydrosphere D. Geosphere

ASSESS YOUR learning 4. Which Earth subsystem is involved if fissure and earthquakes happens after huge explosion? A. Atmosphere B. Hydrosphere C. Geosphere D. Biosphere

PERFORMANCE TASK 1 (- APPLICATION With the knowledge you have learned, how would you maintain the different factors that makes the Earth habitable? Create a campaign ad (digital or using available materials) on how to sustain Earth as a habitable planet. Upload it on social media or post it on areas within your community so you educate others and convince them to do the same.

Thank You!
