Parts of the Stem

The Stems are parts of the shoot system of a plant. The stems transport water and minerals from the root system to all parts of the shoot system.

Parts of the Stem - The Nodes - The Internodes - The Leaf Axil - The Axillary Stem buds - The Terminal Stem buds - The Shoot tip

The Nodes - This are the parts of the stem where the leaves attached to the stem. Latin: nodus – a knot

The Internodes - Are the parts of the stem that are between two nodes.

The Leaf Axil - It is the angle formed between the stem and the leaf.

The Axillary Stem Buds - Are the buds at the axils. The axillary stem buds can form stem shoots.

The Terminal Stem Buds - It is the bud at the tip or apex of the stem.

The Shoot Tip - Or shoot apex is the growing tip of the stem.

Types of Stem The Woody Stem – Thick and Hard, typically not green. The Herbaceous Stem – Are soft and green.
