What is DANCE? - it is the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself.
- is a powerful impulse, but the art of dance is that impulse channeled by skillful performers into something that becomes intensely expressive and that may delight spectators who feel no wish to dance themselves.
“ to represent men’s characters as well as what they do and suffer” - Aristotle -
“ Dancing is an elegant movement, harmoniously composed of beautiful attitude and contrasted graceful posture of the body and parts thereof.” John Weaver - English Ballet Master
“ the crude and spontaneous movement of early man” -Gaston Vuiller - 19 th Century French dance historian
“ a physical expression of inner motion” -John Martin- 20th Century dance critic
A truly universal definition of dance must, therefore, return to the fundamental principle that dance is an art form or activity that utilizes the body and the range of movement of which the body is capable .
ELEMENTS OF DANCE
BODY dance is comprised of various body motions that express feeling and emotion. Our bodies move in ways to express ourselves using locomotor and non-locomotor movementns .
LOCOMOTOR -Movements that take you from one place to another Example: Walking, running, hopping , skipping, jumping, leaping , Galloping, sliding
NON -LOCOMOTOR -Movements that do not take you from one place to another Example:bending, stretching, lifting, twisting, turning, swinging, swaying, shaking, pulling, pushing, balancing
ENERGY is a force at which we express out body motions. Are you moving with hard motions or gentle motion? How do you choose to move?Bounce , shake, explode or sway
SPACE LEVEL to show variation and movement, we need to use our surroundings well. We zigzag, move high and low. We use entire space around us and below us
RELATIONSHIP in dance, we often dance with one other person or with many people in group. Just like with conversation, we communicate and react with our bodies
TIME timing is key to any dance. We follow the rhythm or beat to match out actions with the sound of the music. When working with others, we sometimes mimic another using time.
