Elements of Short Story Setting

Elements of Short Story Characters classified as static or flat – they stay the same all throughout a work. Dynamic or round undergoes a change in personality or attitude.

Types of Characters Protagonist or hero – the pivotal character Antagonist or villain – force that opposes the protagonist

Elements of Short Story Plot – sequence of related events.

Elements of Plot Exposition – gives background information about the characters and the setting.

Elements of Plot Rising Action or Complication - consists of series complications or problems. It could be physical, mental, or spiritual.

Elements of Plot Climax - is the point where the main conflict is finally solved. It is called the highest point of interest because it gives clue to the final outcome of the story.

Types of Conflict Man vs. Man Man vs. Self Man vs. Nature Man vs. Society

Elements of Plot Falling action or Denouement - or denouement is the resolution or the ending of a certain literary piece.

Resolution – tying of loose end.

Elements of Short Story Theme – is the idea expressed in literary work; the central insight that the work gives us about human life.

Point of View First-person Point of View – the character is a character in the story and uses the pronouns I and me to refer to himself or herself. The narrator can describe only his or her own thoughts and feelings.

Point of View Third-person Limited Point of View – the narrator is not a character in the story and tells the story the way an outside observer would.

Point of View Third-person Omniscient Point of View – the narrator knows what all the characters in the story are thinking and feeling.
