ELS STUDY OF LIFE

Slide Content

QUARTER 2, WEEK 2- MELC 1 EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE Unifying Themes in the Study of Life

QUARTER 2, WEEK 2 At the end of the session you will be able to describe how unifying themes (e.g., structure and function, evolution, and ecosystems) in the study of life show the connections among living things and how they interact with each other and with their environment.

BIOLOGY - comprises a number of disciplines such as biochemistry and ecology. As a wide-ranging and complex science, biologists designed the term “unifying themes.”

UNIFYING THEMES connect the different subdisciplines that makeup biology a science

UNIFYING THEMES group of entities or organs that work together to carry out a particular task Biological System

UNIFYING THEMES Living organisms are composed of cell , basic unit of life. Cellular Basis of Life

UNIFYING THEMES Living organisms (biotic factors) are dependent on their environment, which consists of nonliving organisms (abiotic factors). Interaction with the Environment

UNIFYING THEMES Living organisms use a source of energy for their metabolic activities. Energy and Life

UNIFYING THEMES Some living organisms capture the light energy and convert to chemical energy. Energy and Life

UNIFYING THEMES Some living organisms use chemical energy stored in molecules obtained from food. Energy and Life

UNIFYING THEMES Organisms’ structures fit with its function. Form and Function

UNIFYING THEMES Traits of parents are being passed from one generation to next generation. Reproduction and Inheritance

UNIFYING THEMES maintenance of constant internal conditions Regulation/Homeostasis All living organism must live in stable environment.

UNIFYING THEMES Living things need to adapt because the environment where they live varies and constantly changing. Adaptation

UNIFYING THEMES change in living things overtime The genetic make up of a population of a specie changes. Evolution

UNIFYING THEMES The field of science is changing the lives of all organisms through research. Biology and Society

SECOND QUARTER: FIRST CHAPTER TEST Note: Observe HONESTY and TIMELINESS in taking the quiz. Break a leg!

TEST I: IDENTIFICATION Directions: Identify what is being asked, missed, described, and defined in each number. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper. ERASURE means WRONG.

atom> _______> cell> tissue 1

It is a branch of biology that deals with the study of microorganisms. 2

This field advances our knowledge about the anatomy, cell biology, ecology, genetics, molecular biology, and physiology of all living things on Earth. 3

This type of organism may be unicellular or multicellular. 4

Examples of this type of organism are bacteria and archaea. 5

Both eukaryote and prokaryote have cell membrane, cytoplasm, DNA, and _______________. 6

What is the recent species of man? 7

When do geologists and naturalists found several forms of physical evidence that confirmed that Earth is very old. 8

What was formed during the early earth due to meteorites and volcanic eruptions. 9

Life on Earth initially began with prokaryotes, discovered in sedimentary rock formations called __________________. 10

The first photosynthetic organisms thrived the earth which is blue green algae called ____________. 11

These connect the different subdisciplines that makeup biology a science. 12

It is a group of entities or organs that work together to carry out a particular task. 13

It is the structural and functional unit of life. 14

These are biotic factors which are dependent on their environment. 15
