LESSON 2: ORIGIN AND STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH THE SUBSYSTEM ELS 12

PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY A rrange the jumbled letters to form words related to Earth and Earth’s systems. Explain or say something about the formed words. REMATT = ____________ EGYENR = ____________ MOSATEPHRE = ____________ ERPHSEIOB = ____________ EOGSERPHE = ____________ ERPHESHDYRO = _____________ MATTER ENERGY ATMOSPHERE BIOSPHERE GEOSPHERE HYDROSPHERE

ACTIVITY: THINK AND SHARE

Earth is sometimes called the “water planet” or the “blue planet” because seas cover more than two-thirds of its surface. Earth is the only planet or moon in the solar system with rain that falls from clouds, runs over the land, and collects in extensive oceans. It is also the only body we know that supports life. OVERVIEW

Earth is a complex system made up of smaller systems through which matter and energy are continuously cycled. Energy and matter flow through Earth’s spheres: geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. OVERVIEW

Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air or the planet’s jacket called the atmosphere , and this protects the planet and enables life to exist. Our atmosphere contains different types of gases. Consequently, air is made up mostly nitrogen (78 %) and oxygen (21 %) gases . Nitrogen is the most abundant gas and is essential for all living things to grow . Oxygen on the other hand is necessary for humans and animals for survival, and this gas is given off by the plants as one of the by-products during photosynthesis. The remaining one percent is made up of other gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, ozone, argon, neon, helium, hydrogen, dust particles, and chlorofluorocarbons . The said gases exist only in very small amounts and are called trace gases . OVERVIEW

Interaction across the four subsystem The atmosphere provides the geosphere with heat and energy needed for rock breakdown and erosion. The biosphere receives gases, heat, and sunlight (energy) from the atmosphere . It receives water from the hydrosphere and a living medium from the geosphere . OVERVIEW

Read the statement below and answer the question that follows. (See on page 15) List down the terms that are used in the statement that reflects to what made up the Earth. Categorized them based on the following. WHAT’S IN Air Water Land With Life

SUBSYSTEM OF THE EARTH THE FOUR SUBSYSTEM OF THE EARTH ARE: 1. ATMOSPHERE - the gaseous layer above the Earth’s surface primarily composed of different gases such as nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%). The word atmosphere comes from the Greek roots atmos which means gas , and sphaira which means globe or ball . The atmosphere makes up of all the gases on Earth. It extends outward about 10 000 km from the surface of the Earth. 2. BIOSPHERE- the zone of the Earth where all forms of life exist. This serves as the ecosystem of all living and non- living organisms. The biosphere contains the entirety of Earth’s living things. It is sometimes referred to as the “zone of life”. From a geophysical standpoint, biosphere is the global ecological system integrating all living things and their relationship including their interactions with the elements of the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. WHAT IS IT

3. GEOSPHERE - the solid part of the Earth that consists the entire planet from the center of the core to the outer crust. It includes core, mantle and crust of the Earth. The geosphere is considered that portion of the Earth system that includes the Earth's interior, rocks and minerals, landforms and the processes that shape the Earth's surface. The Earth itself is not a perfect sphere but an oblate spheroid, with a radius of 6,357 kilometers (km) from the Earth's center to the North Pole and 6,378 km from the center to the Equator. 4. HYDROSPHERE - the water part of the Earth that includes oceans and glaciers. The hydrosphere is the sum of all water on Earth and the water cycle that distributes it around the planet. Earth is unique in the solar system for its abundant surface waters.

Subsystem of the Earth Activity – Groupings by component (Collaborative Learning) Teacher will group the class into four. Teacher gives the performance task cards to each group. The teacher will ask the student to fill – up the graphic organizer upon seeing the four sub-systems on how to preserve the beauty and the role of the sub-systems on Earth. Group 1 – Atmosphere Group 2 – Geosphere Group 3 – Hydrosphere Group 4 – Biosphere WHAT’S NEW

Scoring Rubrics on Performance Output: Presentation – 15 Understanding of Topic - 20 Team Cooperation - 5 Total – 40 points

(Music Integration) Same group. Applying music into the lyrics.
