ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING IN THE PHILIPPINES Prepared by: Richel L. Suan MAT-English
Objectives At the end of the lesson, the students can: discuss the historical perspective of the language teaching in the Philippines; identify the struggles and triumphs of the English language teaching in the Philippines; and Discriminate the ELT evolution in the country.
INTRODUCTION Language is a medium which one can express one’s idea, thoughts, feelings, etc. English is the language that is being tapped as a necessary language worldwide. English language teaching is indispensable to people whose first language is not English.
Historical Perspective Why not Spanish? Why English? VS. 333 50
MISSION OF THE SPANIARDS Redeem the savage and ignorant souls with religion.
Unlike Spain’s strategy, America’s mean of assimilation and attack was NOT RELIGION - MASS EDUCATION
Less than half a century later…… Adopted the American form of government; Embraced the American dream; Spoke the American language; And were called ‘’little brown American’’
Why has English become so easy to learn and so easy to use in the Philippines than the other language?
Kids learn the language even before going to school Adults are constantly teaching kids of simple vocabularies ‘’close-open’’ ‘’beautiful eyes’’ ‘’body parts’’
But the problem is……………. ‘’We were baptized with the nativization and indigenization of English language’’
Braj Kachru Braj Kachru (1932-2016) was an Indian linguist who studied the global spread of English and coined the term ‘ World Englishes ’.
‘’World Englishes’’ U sed to describe all the different varieties of English that exist worldwide.
Kachru (1980) calls for the use of use of non-native literature in the English classroom……. Using non-native literature in the English language classroom allows learners to see a non-native language as part of the culture with which they identify.
However, Martin (2007) noted that non-native literature is still relegated to the margins of language and literature education today.
ELT EVOLUTION IN THE PHILIPPINES
In the 1970s , English shared its MOI status with Filipino in a bilingual education scheme that is still observed until early 2000s. BEP came under scrutiny after Filipino students were reported to have performed badly in international tests of Math and Science (Martin, 2010) In 2009, pushed for the use of mother-tongue in the early level of elementary school, which is known as MTB-MLE
ELT PRACTICES IN THE PHILIPPINES Communicative Language Teaching English for Specific Purposes Task-Based Language Teaching approach
Communicative Language Teaching Most popular ELT approach. Teaching the language as a functional tool for communication Development of fluency of the language
What exactly does ‘’natural use of language’’ refers to? Doesn’t language in the classroom represent the natural use of the language? Why is the focus on accuracy a bad thing in the English language classroom? Doesn’t a lack of understanding of form impede on meaningful communication?
Mckay (2002 as cited by Martin 2014) provided challenges of CLT Does not seem to present serious learning activity Unable to respond to the needs of the learners Does not work in less-than ideal educational system Burdensome to teachers who are expected to produce authentic learning materials.
English for Specific Purposes Became popular in the Philippines during 1990s Attributed to the growing global spread of English Increased the demands of equipping the English language skills of overseas employment of Filipinos
However, Seidlhofer (2011) warned the approach of ESP, especially in situations where the purposes conforms to native speaker norms.
Task-Based Language Teaching Mindful of the nature of SLA Focus on complexity, accuracy, and fluency
However, Seidlhofer (2011) has pointed out complexity, accuracy, and fluency are defined in reference to native speaker norms.
Triumphs and Struggles of ELT (Domingo, 2020) Teachers see teaching a satisfying job not mainly because of the salary but because they can practice their forte. The progress that they see in the students in the use of the English language provides self-satisfaction for the teachers.
The pains that teachers experience in their current situation in English language teaching revolves around the attitude and motivation of the students in the learning process The lack of resources that can be used in teaching
The learning environment such as the unconducive classroom and lack of internet. The support of the school administration for the teachers‟ training and professional development is seen as a problem and needs full support.
Borlongan (2011) argued for: Re-training of teachers Development of new instructional materials Re-envisioning of instructional leadership in managing innovation in English language teaching in the country.
