M O T I V A T I O N Look at the following set of pictures.

How will you describe their sizes? We know that the Earth is big. How will you describe the size of the sun compared to the Earth and moon? We know that the Earth is big. How will you describe the size of the Earth compared to the moon?

What adjective did we use to describe the size of the sun, moon and earth? Did we use comparison of adjective?

What are the three degrees of comparison of adjective?

Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives Positive Degree Comparative Degree Superlative Degree

An adjective is said to be in the positive degree when there is no comparison. An adjective is said to be in the comparative degree when it is used to compare two nouns/pronouns

An adjective is in superlative degree when it is used to compare more than two nouns/pronouns. We use the article 'the' before the superlative degrees.

How do you form the comparative and superlative degree of adjectives?

1. The banana plant is tall . 2. The apple tree is taller than a banana plant. 3. The mango tree is the tallest among the three. We add -er (comparative degree) and - est (superlative degree) to most one or two syllable words that end in consonants.

1. Paulo is a brave boy. 2. Andrew is braver than Paulo. 3. Anjelo is the bravest of the three boys When the positive degree ends in -e , we add only -r (comparative degree) and - st (superlative degree) to the adjective.

1. Cleo is happy. 2. Kris is happier than Cleo. 3. Mhariz is the happiest among the three girls. When the positive degree ends in consonant + y , we drop the -y and add - ier (comparative degree) and - iest (superlative degree).

1. Chicken soup is hot . 2. Meat soup is hotter than chicken soup 3. Corn soup is the hottest among the three. When the positive adjective is a word of one syllable that ends in CVC we double the ending consonant and then, add -er (comparative degree) and - est (superlative degree).

1. The carabao is slow . 2. The cat is slower than the carabao. 3. The turtle is the slowest among the three. If the one syllable word with last CVC ends with w , we just add – er (comparative degree) and – est superlative degree).

When the positive degree is a word of two or more syllables , we add more/less (comparative degree) and most/least (superlative degree) before the adjective to form a comparative and superlative degrees.

1. Lykan Hypersport car is an expensive car. 2. Ferrari is more expensive than Lykan Hypersport car. 3. Rolls Royce is the most expensive car in the world.
