Lesson Title : Compose Clear and Coherent Sentences Using Appropriate Grammatical Structures Learning Competency : Compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate grammatical structures (verb tenses, conjunctions , adverbs)
CONCEPT NOTES: Verbs come in three tenses: present, past and future. The present tense is used to describe things that are happening right now, or things that are continuous. The past is used to describe things that have already happened (e.g., earlier in the day, yesterday, last week, three years ago). The future tense describes things that have yet to happen (e.g., later, tomorrow, next week, next year, three years from now )..
In the present tense , you must have subject-verb agreement. Add –s to most verbs if the subject is singular. Do not add –s if the subject is plural or I or you. A verb in the past tense tells about an action that already happened. Add – ed to most verbs to show past tense. A verb in the future tense tells about an action that is going to happen. To write about the future, use the special verb will.
Simple Present - I read nearly every day. Simple Past - Last night, I read an entire novel. Simple Future - I will read as much as I can this year . EXERCISE: Write on the blank the correct form of verb in the parenthesis. 1. I ___________________ a wonderful film in the cinema last night. (see)
2. The sun ___________________ at 6:38 yesterday morning (rise) 3. I promise that I ___________________ this secret to anyone (not tell) 4. Conjunctions are used to join clauses, phrases, and words together for constructing sentences. Conjunctions make a link between/among words or groups of words to other parts of the sentence and show a relationship between/among them. A coordinating conjunction is to join two words, phrases, or independent clauses, which are parallel in structure. There are seven coordinating conjunctions which are by far the most common conjunctions: and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet.
A uses a set of words in a parallel sentence structure to show a contrast or to compare the equal parts of a sentence. The words of correlative conjunctions have a special connection between them. The correlative conjunctions are not only - but also, either- or, neither - nor, both - and, not - but, whether - or.
A subordinating conjunction joins elements of an unparallel sentence structure. These elements are usually a dependent clause and an independent clause . Most commonly used subordinating conjunctions are: After, how, than, when, although, if, that, where, as, in order that, though, which, as much as, inasmuch as, unless, while, because, provided, until, who/whom, before, since, what, whoever/whomever.
Example: We went to the stadium and enjoyed the cricket match. Do you want an ice cream or chocolate? Neither Alex nor Robin can play baseball. While he was washing my car, I went to the store. Even though the weather was horrible, they still went outside.

CONCEPT NOTES: An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb (he sings loudly), an adjective (very tall), another adverb (ended too quickly), or even a whole sentence (Fortunately, I had brought an umbrella). Adverbs often end in - ly , but some (such as fast) look exactly the same as their adjective counterparts .
