Learning Objectives: Define context clues; Use context clues through definition in finding the meaning of unfamiliar words Find the meaning of words through context clues by exemplification.

When you read, you may encounter unfamiliar word or words that u do not know. Sometimes, you can get the meanings of these words without using a dictionary

Let us identify the meaning of the context clues

What are context clues?

Context clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words.

You may get the meaning of an unfamiliar word using context clue. Context clues can be presented in various forms.

Two of these types of context clues are presented through exemplification and definition

Definition clues the meaning of the unfamiliar word is directly given in the sentence itself

Exemplification The act of giving an example or examples of something - using examples help the readers to explain or analyze the meaning of words

Take note Punctuation such as commas, dashes - or parenthesis ( ) Signal words such as, that is, are, or, is defined as, means, refers, and in other words

Example: Nocturnal Animals What are Nocturnal Animals?

Nocturnal Animals are creatures which are active during night time Like bat, owl, tarsier and fox

Example: The ancient Chinese used the abacus , a device with movable beads that can be used as calculator.

Learning Task Tell the meaning of each underlines word. Use context clues

1. My mother will enroll my five year-old sister in a kindergarten , a school for very young children. Kindergarten is a school for very young children.

The Girls Scouts Last year, the Girl Scouts in our school celebrated their anniversary with a field trip - a trip made by students to study and observe something at first hand. They explored the virgin forests of Palawan. They went around a place where a thick long line of trees was not yet touched by loggers.

The local officials told them that these forests help their community to have a steady supply of water and electricity. The girls appreciated how the people in the community work together in keeping their forests unspoiled.

• preserving , that is to maintain the original state of the forest
