extends beyond the written word cultivating an

1.Read the short text and guess the meaning of the italicized invented word.
2.Find a partner and discuss the possible meaning of the word by finding clues within the text.

OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A.identify the different types of context clues;
B.use context clues from the material viewed to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words or expressions; and
C.explain the importance of context clues in understanding texts that reflect local culture
LESSON PROPER Discussion:
Context clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar
words.
Types of Context Clues:
A.Definition: In this type, the writer provides a clear and direct definition of the challenging word/s.
Example: Global warming, an increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere, is what we are experiencing today.
B.Example: The writer gives examples that help the reader make sense of the unfamiliar word/ s. Words like "such as," "like," "for example,"
and "including" introduce example clues.
Example: Nonbiodegradable materials such as plastics, tin cans and bottles should be disposed of properly so they could not block our
drainage systems.
C.Synonyms and Antonyms: The writer uses words that have either the same meaning or the opposite meaning in reference to the unfamiliar
word/s.
Examples:
Antonym - My mother has always been passionate about taking care of the environment. She does not fail to share with us her fervent
desire to be a good steward of God's creation.
Synonym - Some people do not see how vital coral reefs are, so they use dynamite in fishing as if these reefs are not important for the
survival of fish.
