NARRATIVE RSSAY DEFINITION : A type of essay that tells a story often from personal experience and explores its significance or meaning KEY FEATURES: Personal story or experience- Often based on the writers own life or an imagined scenario, told from a first person or third person perspective Clear structure- follows a clear beginning , middle and end ( introduction, Body, Conclusion) Descriptive language- uses vivid details to help the reader visualise scenes , characters and events Theme or lesson- the story often conveys a deeper meaning or insight , teaching the reader about life relationships or experiences This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY DEFINITION: An argumentative essay is a type of writing where you take a clear position on a topic and use facts , reasons and examples to convince the reader to agree with you KEY FEATURES: Clear opinion( Thesis statement)- The writer clearly says what they believe about the topic Strong reasons and evidence- the writer supports their opinion with facts, examples and research Counterarguments- The write shows they understand the other side and explains why they disagree Organised structure- The essay has a clear beginning middle and end
DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY DEFINITION: A descriptive essay paints a picture with words by using clear, vivid language to help the reader hear, smell , taste or feel what is being described. KEY FEATURES: Sensory details- Uses the five senses ( sight, sound , smell , taste and touch) to create a clear picture Example : “ The classroom buzzed with noise. Desks stood in neat rows and the chalkboard smelled like fresh dust. A tall woman with kind eyes introduced herself as Mrs Khumalo. I sat in the front row , heart pounding. My palms were sweaty against the smooth and cool surface of the desk The faint taste of anxiety lingered on my tongue , dry and metallic, as I tried to focus on what she was saying” Clear focus- Describes one main subject ( a person , place or event ) in detail Vivid language- Uses strong adjectives, adverbs and figurative language to make the writing Interesting
PERSUASIVE ESSAY DEFINITION: A persuasive essay is a type of writing where the writer tries to convince the reader to agree with their opinion or take a certain action KEY FEATURES: Clear opinion- The writer clearly states what they believe or want Strong reasons- The writer gives good reasons to support their opinion Emotional and logical appeals- The writer uses feelings ( emotion) and facts ( logic) to make the reader agree Call to action- A final appeal to the reader to take action or adopt the writers perspective
