Preparation

Directions: Read the passage. Identify the author’s purpose in writing whether it informs, it entertains, or it persuades.

All about Grasshoppers Grasshoppers have an exoskeleton, jointed legs, and 3 segmented body parts. They also have 2 pairs of wings and large hind legs for jumping. In fact, they can leap up to 20 times their body length! They only eat plants and the males “sing” by rubbing a hind leg and forewing together.    

Why did the author write the passage? What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage? T o inform

LESSON PROPER

What is the author’s purpose? An author is a person who wrote something. An purpose is a reason for doing something.

What is the author’s purpose? The author’s purpose is the reason why someone wrote something.

There are 3 main purposes of writing: 1. Persuade - Write text to influence/convince the reader to do or believe something.

Example: 1. Persuasive Essays 2. Persuasive Speeches 3. Persuasive Letters or Notes

Note: Be careful. A text that is written to persuade may also be entertaining or informative like a funny commercial.

2. Inform - Write text to provide information or to teach something.

Example: 1. Expository Essays 2. Non-Fiction Texts 3. Instructions or Directions

Note: Some directions, articles and reports may be entertaining, but the author’s main purpose is to inform.

3. Entertain - Write text to hold reader’s attention through enjoyment or to give reader enjoyment.

Example: 1. Stories 2. Poem 3. Plays

Note: Stories, poem, plays may teach a lesson but the author’s main purpose is to entertain.

APPLICATION

Directions: Read the descriptions of each item and determine the author’s purpose in writing it (to entertain, persuade, or inform). Then, in a sentence or two, explain your answer.

Group 1 A story about a family trying to stick together and survive through the Great Depression in the Midwest in the 1930s.

Group 2 A section in a history book describing the conditions and causes of the Great Depression in the Midwest in the 1930s.

Group 3 A speech written by Jose Canseco listing the negative effects of steroids and urging young athletes to not use steroids.
