GENERALIZATION

An explanation text is a non-fiction text that is used to describe how or why things happen.

It begins with the topic, describes items related to the topic in the right order, and explains how these items are related to each other. It may have a conclusion.

When do I use it? To tell or explore how things work or how they came to be.

EVALUATION

A.Directions : Read each text-type. Write YES if it gives explanation and NO if it does not.

________1. You’ll never get me up in one of those things; said Mandy, eyeing the huge hot air balloon. Then she took another picture.

________2. Unfortunately, many species of bats are endangered or already extinct. It is vital that we join forces to protect the bats that remain. Bats feed on harmful insect pests. They are also responsible for up to 95% of the residing of the tropical rain forests. Without those forests our delicate balance of oxygen and moisture could be destroyed

________3. Burying garbage also causes both air and water pollution, and simply transporting it to the sites consumes an increasing amount of valuable fossil fuels, which produces more pollution and other problems. Buried in a landfill, the typical plastic trash bag takes 1,000 years to degrade, giving off toxins as it does .

________4. Many people do not realize that they have a responsibility to take care of their environment. Simply separating the wet and dry garbage is one way. Another is reducing the amount of trash that they add up to the surroundings. Finally, recycling is another way to take care of the environment. It is making a new product out of a new material that has already served its purpose.

________5. You probably learned the 3 Rs of responsible waste management in school. These are the three essential components of environmentally-responsible consumer behavior - reduce, reuse and recycle.

ASSIGNMENT

Read some more explanation texts for our discussion tomorrow.
